George R. R. Martin says HBO is developing 5 Game of Thrones spinoffs but it doesn't include the 2 fan favourites

Game of Thrones Season 7 will kick off in about two months from now, and knowing that the show has just one last season left after this one is just starting to hit us. There is no doubt that Game of Thrones made a lot of cash for HBO  and it makes sense that they would want to follow it up. We recently reported about exactly how prepared HBO were, to deal with the end of the show, as they’re working on a total of four spin-off ideas, all involving four new writers. George R. R. Martin, the creator of the Thrones universe, recently commented on the spin-off talk and went on to give a few more details about it. Read on!

George took to his Not A Blog to debunk the mysteries and misinformation around the news. First of all, the previous report had said that there were four spin-off ideas under development, under writers Max Borenstein, Jane Goldman, Brian Helgeland, and Carly Wray. George confirmed this, and went on to give a little more insight:

“It was stated in some of the reports that I am working with two of the four writers. That’s not quite right. I’ve actually been working with all four of the writers. Every one of the four has visited me here in Santa Fe, some of them more than once, and we’ve spent days together discussing their ideas, the history of Westeros and the world beyond, and sundry details found only in The World of Ice & Fire and The Lands of Ice & Fire… when we weren’t drinking margaritas and eating chile rellenos and visiting Meow Wolf. They are all amazing talents, and I am excited to be working with them. In between visits, I’ve been in touch with them by phone, text, and email, and I expect there will be a lot more back-and-forth as we move forward.”

He went on to reveal that although four ideas were being developed in the beginning, as of now, the count has gone up to five. He explained:

“We had four scripts in development when I arrived in LA last week, but by the time I left we had five. We have added a fifth writer to the original four. No, I will not reveal the name here. HBO announced the names of the first four, and will no doubt announce the fifth as well, once his deal has closed. He’s a really terrific addition, however, a great guy and a fine writer, and aside from me and maybe Elio and Linda, I don’t know anyone who knows and loves Westeros as well as he does.”

Another important bit of information George confirmed was that the ideas under development were definitely not sequels to Game of Thrones, and were better fit as prequels, if anything and that they might not even be set in Westeros. He said that he wouldn’t really call them spin-offs, and that they were stories based in the “secondary universe” of the world he has created, and that the word “successor shows” would be the best term to describe them. George also said that he doesn’t know how many of the ideas would make it to the screen, but since we were expecting just one spin-off to begin with, the idea of anything more than that just being possible, is delightful.

George also ruled out a few spin-off ideas which the fans had been thinking are among those under development. First off, he said that Dunk and Egg isn’t among the ideas, and that is because he hasn’t finished telling that story, and he wouldn’t want another TV show based on his work, the pace of which, surpasses his own, like Game of Thrones did.

Next up, George also ruled out Robert’s Rebellion, which was perhaps the most popular choice for a spin-off. He explained:

“I know thousands of you want that, I know there’s a petition… but by the time I finish writing A SONG OF ICE & FIRE, you will know every important thing that happened in Robert’s Rebellion. There would be no surprises or revelations left in such a show, just the acting out of conflicts whose resolutions you already know. That’s not a story I want to tell just now; it would feel too much like a twice-told tale.”

Lastly, he confirmed, in all caps and bold letters, that he was still working on The Winds of Winter, in his full capacity, while juggling with his other work responsibilities. That’s always great to hear!
