george r r martin updates on winds of winter a song of ice and fire

The idea of Game of Thrones spinoff shows has been around for a really long time – HBO has been discussing the possibility of exploring more of the Martinverse since even before the original series came to a close. Seeing how he was essentially out of the round table, once the show stopped following his material (partly due to his own fault), George R. R. Martin was afraid the same would happen to the rest of the shows. Thankfully, it is not the case anymore, and Martin is happy to be a part of each of them, to a much greater extent.

Why was Martin initially against the Dunk and Egg spinoff?

Back in 2017 when HBO was still looking for options about the future of Game of Thrones, Martin wrote on his blog Not A Blog:

“We’re not doing Dunk & Egg. Eventually, sure, I’d love that, and so would many of you. But I’ve only written and published three novellas to date, and there are at least seven or eight or ten more I want to write. We all know how slow I am, and how fast a television show can move. I don’t want to repeat what happened with GAME OF THRONES itself, where the show gets ahead of the books. When the day comes that I’ve finished telling all my tales of Dunk & Egg, then we’ll do a tv show about them… but that day is still a long ways off.”

What made George R. R. Martin change his mind?

Well, a lot of things. One, House of The Dragon’s showrunner Ryan Condal is very close with George R. R. Martin, and he basically let Martin supervise the whole thing. As a result, the first season was a huge success which gave a boost to Martin’s confidence. Now with a much better team that actually listens to his tips and advice, and of course, HBO willing to spend every single penny for his projects, there is nothing to stop the Game of Thrones author from building the world he had always dreamed of, at least on the TV screen.

How many episodes will there be in The Hedge Knight Season 1?

The Game of Thrones author revealed quite recently some crucial details about the spinoff:

“HBO has given us a greenlight to film for a full season (not just a pilot), most likely of six episodes… though that is not set in stone, and won’t be until considerably later in the process. To date I have written and published three novellas about Dunk & Egg — “The Hedge Knight,” “The Sworn Sword,” and “The Mystery Knight,” each of them initially published independently in various anthologies before being collected together in A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS.”
