Dowager Queen Alicent Hightower is one of the leading ladies of the show House of the Dragon. The show is a prequel spinoff of the legendary Game of Thrones series. One of the most liked characters was Queen Margaery Tyrell. Most fans would agree that among all the characters, she was the most suitable to be the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. But unfortunately, she could not survive Cersei Lannister. Turns out Margaery is a distant descendant of Alicent.

SPOILER ALERT: Minor spoilers for the book, Fire & Blood, are ahead.

Another one: House of the Dragon’s Lady Redwyne could be Olenna Tyrell’s ancestor

Quick Facts

  • Margaery Tyrell is descended from Alicent’s cousin.
  • Alicent’s lineage ended after all her children and grandchildren died due to the Dance of the Dragons.
  • The Hightower family line continued through Alicent’s uncle, Lord Hobert Hightower.
  • Lady Alerie Hightower, a descendant of Lord Hobert, married Lord Mace Tyrell
  • Lady Alerie had four children with Lord Mace: Loras, Garlen, Willas, and Margaery.
  • Margaery was born 150 years after Alicent’s death, making Alicent her great-great-great-aunt.

Alicent Hightower and her father, Ser Otto Hightower, hail from the noble House Hightower, which rules over Oldtown. This seat of power lies near Highgarden, the stronghold of House Tyrell. While Alicent and Margaery Tyrell share a distant bloodline, they are not directly related. Margaery is actually descended from Alicent’s cousin. Otto Hightower’s lineage ends with his great-grandchildren, who left no heirs, but the Hightower line continues through Otto’s older brother, Lord Hobert Hightower.

Generations later, the Hightower family’s influence extends through Lady Alerie Hightower, who marries Lord Mace Tyrell. Together, they have four children: Loras, Garlen, Willas, and Margaery Tyrell. Known for her intelligence and beauty, Margaery rose to prominence in Game of Thrones nearly 150 years after Alicent’s passing, making Alicent her presumed great-great-great-aunt.

Olivia Cooke confirmed this during an interview with WIRED Magazine.

Despite being centuries apart, Alicent and Margaery share similar traits in their strategic minds and ambition. However, the two women approach power very differently. Margaery, composed and poised, skillfully navigates court politics to secure alliances and her position, playing the game of thrones with grace and tact. Alicent, on the other hand, is often anxious and burdened with mistrust, a mindset deeply influenced by her father’s political maneuvering and ambitions.
