New photos show Alicent Hightower in a green dress for the royal wedding, here’s why it’s important
Whether it is Game of Thrones or its spin-off House of the Dragon, there will always be competition for the Iron Throne. House of the Dragon is already gearing up toward the much-awaited Green vs. Black storyline. In the book on which the series is based, Fire & Blood, after King Viserys’ death, the tension between Rhaenyra and Alicent grows exponentially. It can only be one person on the throne, either Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen or Alicent’s eldest son, Aegon Targaryen. So what does it matter if Alicent wore a green dress to Rhaenyra’s wedding?

Alicent’s green dress is historical. We know Rhaenyra’s marriage to Laenor Velaryon is purely political. It serves to strengthen Rhaenyra’s ascension to the throne in the future. But Ser Otto Hightower is adamant about ensuring his grandson Aegon II inherits the throne. The show foreshadows the future war by wearing a green gown to a marriage that further threatens her son’s claim to the throne. Alicent’s signature green dresses decide the name of her faction in the war, the ‘Greens’.
The royal wedding is the first time we see Alicent in a regal, rich green dress. This might be the show’s way of teasing book fans that the rift between her and Rhaenyra is only deepening. This is further solidified by the title of Episode 6, The Princess and The Queen. As time goes on, we will increasingly see Alicent in stately green dresses. Soon enough, Rhaenyra will also don her Targaryen colors, Black and Red, which is why her side is known as the ‘Blacks.’ The name of episodes 9 and 10 hints at the split occurring towards the end of the season. Episode 9 is titled “The Green Council,” and Episode 10 is titled “The Black Queen.”
