A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms screenwriter passes away at 32
Honoring the life of a trailblazing screenwriter and poet whose storytelling continues to inspire.
Screenwriter Aziza Barnes, who was a screenwriter for HBO’s upcoming series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has sadly passed. Barnes was known for their contributions to television and poetry. Their passing at age 32 has left a significant void in the creative community.
Barnes also wrote for FX’s “Snowfall” and Netflix’s “Teenage Bounty Hunters.” As a poet, they were celebrated for their powerful voice and unique perspective. Their work has touched many lives, cementing their place as a trailblazer in modern storytelling.

Remembering the legacy of Aziza Barnes
Aziza Barnes, born in Los Angeles, was a talented writer and poet. They earned a BFA from New York University and pursued an MFA at the University of Mississippi. They were known for their unique voice and dedication to storytelling, both in television and poetry.
On December 15th, Barnes’ family released a statement honoring their life and work.
“With heavy hearts, we regret to inform you of the passing of an undeniable and beloved artist, child, sibling, and friend Aziza ‘Z’ Barnes. Z has touched and inspired countless individuals both in their community and industry and will be deeply missed and endlessly loved by all who were fortunate to have experienced their presence and work. An incomparable talent, we look for understanding in Z’s words, and wish comfort and understanding as we grieve this loss.”
Friends and colleagues have shared tributes to Barnes, highlighting their brilliance and kindness. Safia Elhillo, a longtime friend, described them as a “brilliant writer” and “bender of the genre.” Elhillo shared one of Barnes’ cherished poems, “Eulogy for Her,” as a tribute to their enduring impact.

Their passing is a tragic loss, but their legacy will continue to inspire future generations of writers and creators.
