George R.R. Martin explains the Doom of Valyria in a new House of the Dragon video
George R. R. Martin is one of today’s most well-known authors. His writings have a distinct flavor since he incorporates aspects from both the actual world and fiction. Martin’s universe is extremely detailed and vast. Sometimes readers might get lost in the wide variety of landscapes he portrays in his books. Hence, he took it upon himself to tell the stories of every continent, this time about Valyria.
George R. R. Martin tells the history of Valyria
In a recent video released by the Game of Thrones official YouTube channel, Martin holds a map and explains, “About 400 years before the time of Game of Thrones, or 200 years before the time of House of the Dragon, the Valyrian Peninsula exploded. And it was called the Doom of Valyria, and it was over in a day. It was over in a few hours. It actually blew the entire section.”

Martin goes on to describe in brief what happened in the aftermath, “The land cracked. The sea rushed in from both sides. There’s now a very dangerous sea called the Smoking Sea. The North side of the peninsula is sort of breaking the former peninsula in half. What used to be lands attached to each other are now some barren, windswept islands. And of course, hundreds of dragons died in an instant, along with millions of people. That was the dream Daenys the Dreamer had seen coming.”
