The Valyrian sculpture in House of The Dragon took two months of 24/7 3-D printing to build
The eighth episode of Game of Thrones prequel House of The Dragon was special in many ways. Not only did it feature the last time jump of the series, with the kids all growing up right before the Dance of the Dragons, but it was also emotionally one of the strongest episodes. Fans and critics are in awe of Paddy Considine and Matt Smith’s performances in the throne room in King’s Landing. However, there’s one impressive structure that hasn’t received much public attention so far – King Viserys’ stone sculpture of the Old Valyrian freehold. And there’s a lot of hard work that went behind the scenes to craft it to life.
In the latest episode of The House that Dragon built, the cast and the crew revealed a lot of details and efforts that went into the creation of the set in the show.
Peter Lee (Assistant Prop modeler): It had to look handmade. But obviously, we couldn’t make an eight-meter model out of pumice. So we had to come up with a technique for making it quickly, but also give the finish of pumice. The 3D printers were our little soldiers in the background, working for about two months, 24/7, printing out hundreds of buildings. A lot of the buildings were so large it had to be made in small components, so we had to glue them back together again.
Craig Narramore (Prop modeler): We’ve done it all in PLA plastic on these machines so the beauty is, with the machine, you do get a hard edge finish, but then you can go over it with textures and finishes and paint effect to make it look like pumice stone.
Aaron Harvey (Prop modeler): All the main buildings, it’s all 3D printed. Take about 24-48 hours for that one building to be done.
