The cast and the crew of House of The Dragon give an overview of some of the major dragons featured in Season 1
Game of Thrones prequel House of The Dragon will be covering the events from the time when Targaryens were flourishing in Westeros, and so were their dragons, about 200 years prior to the timeline of the original show. In an earlier discussion with House of The Dragon showrunner Ryan J. Condal and David Mendel on their podcast, The Stuff Dreams are Made of, Game of Thrones creator George R. R. Martin confirmed the existence of 17 dragons on the show, far more than what we had on Game of Thrones.
In a recent behind-the-scenes video that was released after the premiere of episode 7, titled The Age of Dragons, creator George R.R. Martin, showrunner Ryan Condal, co-executive producer David Hancock, and more discussed the storytelling and work that went into creating the dragons, plus gave an overview of some of the major dragons featured in Season 1.
Ryan Condal: What we really tried to do was to create a world where dragons existed. At this point in history, there have never been as many dragons in the world since the time of Old Valyria.
David Hancock: They are treated with fear, reverence, and awe. But they are also used as threats.
Miguel Sapochnik: They’re weapons of mass destruction. The reason that Targaryens are considered as being closer to gods is because of their dragons.
Condal: The first dragon that we see is Rhaenyra’s Syrax. Syrax was hatched to Rhaenyra when she was a child. I think the dragons that are born to their riders have a deeper bond than any of the other dragons. We approached her like a bird of prey, proud, honorable, and built for speed.
George R. R. Martin: Caraxes, the Blood Wyrm, Daemon’s dragon, is quite another thing. Vicious and short-tempered, something that the dragon and the rider have in common. Caraxes has seen a lot of battle and has burned a lot of people, earning him the title of the Blood Wyrm. Another major dragon is, of course, Vhagar.
Condal: Vhagar is the oldest, largest dragon in the world. Vhagar is kind of old and falling apart a bit. The way we’ve approached dragons is that they never stop growing, they keep growing until they die.
