George R.R. Martin had 3 specific requests for House of The Dragon, including a correction from Game of Thrones
When it comes to fantasy, very few come close to the amazing world building ability of George R. R. Martin. And just as we are a fan of Martin’s work, Martin is a fan of perfection, one of the reasons why his next book in the ASOIAF series ‘Winds of Winter’ is taking so long. So when he got the chance to work with his “superfan” Ryan Condal in the upcoming prequel House of The Dragon, he made sure to include a few particular details in the new HBO Max adaptation.
House of The Dragon’s showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik talked to Insider in a recent press conference, and revealed that Martin requested them to include three details from his books. They include: Colorful dragons, an emphasis on bright heraldry, and the addition of King Jaehaerys Targaryen II, something that David Benioff and D. B. Weiss omitted in Game of Thrones.
“David and Dan and skipped over Jaehaerys for reasons of clarity that he really didn’t understand,” Sapochnik said, referring to Martin. “He had a bee in his bonnet about it. He wanted us to right that wrong.”
Martin was hopeful that House of the Dragon would be the perfect time for fans to see dragons of varying size, shape, and color, so he asked the showrunners to give book-accurate color and design to the dragons.
Martin also asked Condal that the prequel should include a lot of symbolic color related to all the major and minor Houses of Westeros.
“It’s such a time of high decadence and peace and wealth and prosperity for the realm,” Condal said. “Everybody would really festoon themselves in their house colors and be proud of them as they marched into the tournament.”
