Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams talks about exploring notions of beauty
Game of Thrones employed some of the most good-looking talents across the world, however, beauty is to the eye of the beholder. This is so true in the real world, for example, Conleth Hill who played Lord Varys was really depressed when he had to chop his hair for the role, until Rory McCann (The Hound) told him to shut up. Actress Maisie Williams, who played Arya Stark on the show, also struggled with her looks and self confidence for a while, even during her time on Game of Thrones.
In an interview with Porter, Williams opened up about how concerned she was about her image, and said, “For the longest time, I was battling with wanting to look traditionally like what people picture as beautiful and I was getting really lost in that.”
She continued, “Then, I cut my hair into a mullet and said, ‘Well, I’m not going to even try any more and I’m just gonna do something which I think really suits me and is still very different to everything I’ve been doing but feels right. I was never getting the, ‘Oh my gosh, she looks so beautiful’ [comments] before, but certainly afterwards I was getting, ‘Wow, that’s really cool.’”
What Maisie has faced, and is still facing is quite relatable in real life, so do the world a small favour, talk to people like Maisie who are struggling with low self-esteem, and tell them they’re beautiful. You’ll certainly light-up someone’s day!
