Game of Thrones showrunners reveal The Hound almost killed the Night King

The death of the Night King on Game of Thrones TV series is definitely one of the most paused moments in television history. The end of his terror was one of the most anticipated events on the show. Even the showrunners went through a lot of mind-boggling discussions to decide the hero who would end the Long Night. They even thought about having Sandor Clegane, The Hound, played by Rory McCann, kill the Night King.
In the book Fire Cannot Kill A Dragon, written by Entertainment Weekly editor James Hibberd, the cast and crew reveal interesting and unheard details about the show. (Including the show’s botched pilot.) The showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss talked to James about the names they considered for doing the act.
“It had to be somebody with believable access to Valyrian steel. We didn’t want it to be Jon because he’s always saving the day. We talked about the Hound at one point, but we wanted his big thing to be Clegane Bowl. Ultimately it wouldn’t have felt right if it was Jon or Brienne or the Hound.”
The showrunners also admitted Jon Snow (Kit Harington) killing the Night King (Vladimir Furdik) would have been too obvious. Therefore Arya (Maisie Williams) was chosen for the act, paying off her years of training in Braavos. They had decided to save The Hound for the battle with his brother, The Mountain, better known as the Clegane Bowl.
