Why Vhagar and Arrax defied commands in House of The Dragon Episode 10
The first season of Game of Thrones prequel House of The Dragon is finally over, and it was heartbreaking and shocking, to say the least. The end of the episode, and season one, means we will officially be opening the door to the civil war ‘Dance of the Dragons’, an event from Fire & Blood that the show is based on. And the key to the lock was the brutal killing of young Prince Lucerys ‘Luke’ Velaryon and his dragon, Arrax, by Prince Aemond and his dragon, Vhagar. However, the death scene was very different from what fans had in mind when they first read Fire & Blood.
We see that Aemond kind of decides to leave Lucerys after scaring the s*it out of him and bullying him into scurrying and hiding into the small rocky island in the sea. However, Arrax, out of nowhere, flies to Vhagar and attacks her head-on, despite Luke trying his best to hold back the tiny dragon. Vhagar, instinctively, goes after Luke and Arrax, and gulps them down in the blink of an eye.
It might appear as quite pointless to many fans, however, this was foreshadowed in the series earlier by Viserys himself in episode one, right before Rhaenyra’s naming as the heir to the Iron Throne. He said, “The idea that we control the dragons is an illusion.” And he is quite right, as evident from the death scene we witnessed today.
Dragons are proud creatures, as stated in Fire and Blood. You cannot actually command them, the stronger your bond is, the better they feel your emotions. The commands are like an introductory course. For instance, how Daemon doesn’t need to speak a word to Caraxes.
Luke and Aemond are quite inexperienced as compared to Daemon or Rhaenys. And they don’t treat dragons like pets. If you’ve noticed, Daemon and Rhaenys treat dragons as if they are companions. These young kids are yet to learn that. We saw that kind of bond between Syrax and Rhaenyra at the beginning of the episode.
