Why did Melisandre head for Volantis?
July 26th, 1:08am July 26th, 1:08am Abhinav Pathak22, Game of Thrones geek, Passionate Fiction Writer and the author of ‘Gopalkant’s Wife’.
Melisandre, the Red Priestess from Asshai, had played a prominent role in the story in the story since her debut in the episode ‘The North Remembers’ of the second season. But, in the last season, she appeared only in two episodes namely ‘Stormborn’ and ‘The Queen’s Justice’.
‘I believe you have a role to play…so does another…Jon Snow, the King in the North…,’ said Melisandre to Daenerys Targaryen in the second episode of the seventh season. Dany summoned Jon to Dragonstone, based on her suggestion.
Melisandre quietly watched as Jon arrived with Davos Seaworth to meet the dragon queen, revealing her denial to meet him to Varys, who was closely spying on her.
She said to him that she would go to Volantis next and upon being advised not to return back to Westeros, she told him, ”Oh, I will return, dear spider…one last time…I have to die in this strange country, just like you.”
This statement of Melisandre along with a few other instances in the previous seasons of series makes it clear that she will have some or the other role in the endgame of Game of Thrones. Another instance that we can find in the series is her meeting with Arya Stark when she comes to take away Robert Baratheon’s bastard son, Gendry to use him for some bizarre blood magic rituals with leeches.
‘I see a darkness in you and in that darkness, eyes staring back at me…brown eyes, blues eyes, green eyes…eyes you’ll shut forever. We will meet again,’ she said to Arya, giving away a possibility of the two meet again in the future. Since then she’s been listed on Arya’s list – the ones she is going to kill, which leads us to yet another speculation for the end game.
But, what is her real purpose behind going to the free city of Volantis, which lies miles away on another continent, Essos? Back in the fifth episode of the sixth season, we had a scene involving Tyrion Lannister, Varys, and Kinvara, the high-priestess of the Red Temple, in Volantis.
“We serve the same queen. If you are her true friend, you have nothing to fear from me,” Kinvara said to Varys, threatening him that he should be loyal to Daenerys. So, up to this point, we can speculate that the Red Priests of Volantis know the secrets of Varys.
We will surely find out the secret of the religion of R’hllor and what help it can provide in the Great War in the final season. Also, the book readers might know of the ‘Fiery Hand’, the army of slave soldiers, who guard the temple of Volantis. Possibly, even they can be brought in the game, in the final season and maybe to summon them, Melisandre headed to Volantis.
So, what do you think will be the role of the religion of R’hllor in the final season? How will they support ‘the prince or princess who will bring the dawn”? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section.
