Exploring Ormund Hightower’s Role in the Dance of the Dragons.
House of the Dragon explores the Targaryen dynasty and the events leading to the Dance of the Dragons. The series introduces House Hightower, a family with strong ties to the Faith of the Seven and the Citadel in Oldtown.
Oldtown, ruled by House Hightower, is the home of the maesters and the Starry Sept. While their focus is on faith and knowledge, the Hightowers also maintain a strong army, which plays a role in the civil war. In season two, the armies of the realm began moving into battle as the Dance of the Dragons unfolded.
House Hightower did not appear in Game of Thrones, but in House of the Dragon, they are central to the story. Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, works to strengthen the family’s position at court. In season one, we were introduced to other members of House Hightower, emphasizing their ties to Oldtown and the Greens.
In season two, the Hightower army was shown alongside Daeron Targaryen and his dragon, Tessarion. Otto Hightower has mentioned his nephew, Ormund Hightower, who is mustering an army to support the Greens. This makes it highly likely that Ormund will appear in season three.
As Otto’s nephew, Ormund is positioned to lead the Hightower forces. In George R. R. Martin’s books, he plays an important role in the Dance of the Dragons, commanding the Hightower army in several key battles. This article explores everything we know so far about Ormund Hightower and his likely appearance in House of the Dragon.

Ormund Hightower’s Leadership
Ormund Hightower was the Lord of the Hightower and the head of House Hightower during the Dance of the Dragons. He wielded the Valyrian steel blade Vigilance, an heirloom of his house. Ormund was the nephew of Ser Otto Hightower, who served as Hand of the King to Jaehaerys I, Viserys I, and Aegon II Targaryen.
Ormund had three sons, Lyonel, Martyn, and Garmund, and at least one daughter, Bethany, with his first wife. After her death in childbirth, Ormund married Samantha Tarly, who was only two years older than his eldest son.
During the Dance of the Dragons, Ormund led the Reach forces for the Greens, supporting King Aegon II Targaryen. His host included one thousand knights, one thousand archers, three thousand men-at-arms, and additional troops of lesser discipline. However, not all the Reach lords supported him. Ser Alan Beesbury, Lord Alan Tarly, and Lord Owen Costayne raided Ormund’s camps, killed scouts, and attacked his baggage train.
Military Campaigns and Battles
Ormund played a key role in the Battle of the Honeywine. His forces were trapped between Lord Thaddeus Rowan and Tom Flowers on one side and the raiding lords on the other. As Ormund’s lines began to crumble, Prince Daeron Targaryen arrived on his dragon Tessarion, turning the battle in favor of the Greens. After the victory, Ormund knighted Daeron with Vigilance and named him Ser Daeron the Daring.
After the fall of King’s Landing, Ormund continued to lead the Greens in the south. He spared Lady Merryweather during the siege of Longtable but led the sack of Bitterbridge with Daeron. This attack was in retaliation for the death of Prince Maelor Targaryen in that town.
During the First Battle of Tumbleton, Ormund’s archers and heavy cavalry defeated the six thousand troops of Ser Garibald Grey. However, the battle turned when Roderick Dustin, leading the Winter Wolves, charged with war cries. Dustin broke through Ormund’s lines and killed him in single combat, though Dustin was also slain.
After Ormund’s Death
Ormund’s death during the First Battle of Tumbleton left his army leaderless. His cousin, Ser Bryndon Hightower, also died while protecting Ormund during the battle. The remaining Greens forces were divided, with competing factions struggling for leadership. Ser Hobert Hightower, another cousin, unsuccessfully attempted to take command.
Following the Second Battle of Tumbleton, the fragmented Green host disbanded. Ormund’s death marked a turning point for House Hightower during the war. His fifteen-year-old son, Lyonel, succeeded him as Lord of the Hightower. Lyonel later took Samantha Tarly, his father’s second wife, as his paramour, causing controversy within the house.
