“I thought that one would get a reaction”: Tom Glynn-Carney recalls reading about Aegon losing his “sausage” in the Battle of Rook’s Rest
A traumatic experience of Aegon’s life.
As the 2nd season of House of the Dragon unfolded, tensions were running high. The rift between the Blacks and Greens had grown wider and the stakes higher. Amidst the political intrigue and fiery battles, Tom Glynn-Carney’s character was struggling to find his place in the midst of the chaos. With his loyalties tested and his emotions raw, he was forced to confront the depths of his own vulnerability.
The sufferings of Aegon after the war
Tom Glynn-Carney’s character suffered a gruesome injury at Rook’s Rest, which left him physically and emotionally scarred. As he lay on the ground, his character’s body was broken and battered. Tom felt a sense of vulnerability wash over him. The line resonated with him, especially when it’s followed by his sudden and dramatic burning, which had him laughing and thinking, It was a moment of pure vulnerability for his character. In an interview with NME, Tom Glynn-Carney said,
“This season, he’s more than just a one-dimensional villain. I wanted to convey his complexity and emotional vulnerability. One line that really stood out to me was when he says, ‘My heart is destroyed…’ and then bursts into flames, like a sausage on a spit! (laughs) I remember reading that line for the first time and thinking, ‘Oh fuck, that’s gonna get a reaction!’
It was a moment where I felt my character was at his most exposed and raw, and it really tipped me into feeling empathy for him. The scene around the table with Alicent, where he says, ‘What would you have me do? Just tell me and I’ll do it…’ was a real turning point for me. It showed me that he’s not just a ‘bad egg,’ but a multifaceted person with a rich inner life.”

Aegon and Larys on a different journey
Alicent’s secret agreement to sacrifice Aegon will change everything. Phia Saban, who plays Helaena, shares her thoughts on the shocking deal and the difficulty of discovering a family member’s betrayal. Will Helaena learn the truth and what will be the consequences? Saban remains in the dark about Season 3’s plot, including Helaena’s potential reaction and whether her prophetic abilities have already hinted at the betrayal.
“It would be a tough pill to swallow to know that about any member of your family. I wonder if [Helaena will] ever hear that that was the plan. I wonder what will happen.”
With writing currently underway for Season 3, Saban said she has “no idea what’s happening next season,” including where Helaena might be should she hear of her mother’s plan, or if her seeing powers would have clued her in.”
