Rhaenyra faces Vermithor in new House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 5 promo
The new House of the Dragon promo hints at crucial developments.
The latest House of the Dragon promo has fans buzzing with speculation. The opening shot features Rhaenyra approaching the mighty dragon Vermithor, sparking theories about her potentially claiming the dragon in the next episode. Last season, Daemon attempted to calm Vermithor by singing to him in High Valyrian.
Vermithor, known as the Bronze Fury, is the most enormous dragon after Vhagar and was once ridden by King Jaehaerys the Conciliator. However, the likelihood of Rhaenyra becoming Vermithor’s new rider remains to be determined.

The promo’s focus on Rhaenyra and Vermithor has led many to believe the next episode will address the need for new dragonriders. With the death of Rhaenys and Meleys, the Black faction has lost a crucial dragonrider. Considering Vermithor’s size and strength, the Blacks’ best chance to combat Vhagar might be finding new riders.
In the book Fire and Blood, Prince Jacaerys calls for new dragonriders in an event known as the Sowing of the Dragonseeds. According to the book, Hugh Hammer, a blacksmith’s son, becomes Vermithor’s rider. This surprised many, but there were rumors that Hugh had Valyrian blood. Ulf the White, another character this season, claims to be a son of Baelon the Brave, which could imply that Hugh Hammer might also be a bastard son of Baelon, making him Rhaenyra’s uncle.
Given its dramatic significance, some believe the scene featuring Vermithor and Rhaenyra will close the episode. The rest of the promo highlights key moments from season 2 and includes critical reviews that praise House of the Dragon as the biggest show of the summer, with some calling it “A return to Thrones’ Golden Age.” This glowing feedback has only heightened the excitement for upcoming episodes.
