On International Women's Day Emilia Clarke writes about nudity on Game of Thrones and women equality

Game of Thrones is a show set in a medieval time, and as such, one would expect the show to be rough on the female gender, and it often is. However, at the same time, the story of the show, for the most part, hinges on female characters, and boy oh boy, are they strong. From Sansa Stark, to Daenerys Targaryen, the women on the show totally steal it. Not only are the characters strong women, but the actresses playing them are quite the powerful women in real life, as well. Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys, is a women’s rights activist herself, and her latest project for this year’s International Women’s Day is that she will be a guest editor for the All Women Everywhere edition of The Huffington Post UK, which will be “a platform to reflect the diverse mix of female experience and voices in Britain today,” and will run for the whole month.

Emilia Clarke wrote an editorial for the same, and she talked about gender equality, and nudity on Game of Thrones, and more. Here are some of the excerpts from the piece.

Talking about her work, and equality in the worspace, she said :

“Do I get treated equally at work? Not always. Does every woman? No, and the statistics back that up. Do I get asked questions at press junkets by men and women alike, specifically because they will get headline grabbing responses coming from a young woman? Yes.”

She went on to talk about nudity on Game of Thrones :

“If you’ve watched Game of Thrones then, spoiler, you will have seen me in the nude. There are plenty of ways in which people want me to respond to questions about this fact. And plenty of reasons why I do not feel the need to justify myself.

I believe we all have the opportunity to stand up as women in our ordinary everyday lives. I believe that we all have the power to replace hate with justice, open-heartedness and kindness.”

She ended the piece saying that in the end, it all came down to kindness :

“As I read recently, kindness is sexy, it’s good for us, it makes us feel happy and valued. Positive action starts with small individual deeds that accumulate over time and become a movement… a movement toward a more equal society where kindness anchors our feet to the ground while giving us the momentum to keep chipping away together.

With my voice, I hope the feminist mind set my family instilled in me becomes the new normal, and boys and girls are raised to know they are equal.”
