Nathalie Emmanuel shares her insight on performing a nude scene in Game of Thrones

The first nude scene in Game of Thrones this season came along with the long anticipated romance between two of the most loyal faces the show has ever witnessed. We are talking about the sensual amorousness between the valiant commander of the unsullied Grey Worm and Daenerys’ loyal confidant Missandei of Naath. The pair had the relationship developing since the 3 season of Game of Thrones which finally consummated in 2nd episode of the seventh season. The night before Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson) departs for his mission to capture Casterly Rock- the seat of the Lannisters, they surrender themselves to each other for a physical intimacy. The mission is definitely a precarious one and the odds of Grey Worm returning back with his head on his body are faint.

In a dialogue with Entertainment Weekly, Nathalie says “We’ve seen them show their interest in each other, we’ve seen them in a roundabout way express it for each other, but not really say it. This point is the climax and they physically act upon it.”

Being a eunuch, Grey Worm has always tried to keep himself away from any sexual encounter with Missandei. Even he admits that fear has inflicted over him and the fear is that of losing Missandei after he goes off to rock. He says “You are my weakness. When Unsullied are young, the masters learn their fears. One boy is scared of dogs, one boy hates high places, and one is frightened of the ocean.” He adds, “But I had no fears. I was never the biggest, never the strongest… but I was bravest, always. Until I meet Missandei from the Isle of Naath. Now I have fear.” This fear pushes him to break his cocoon and take the initiative.

“There’s something unique about it purely because of Grey Worm’s situation — his brutal history of being mutilated — there’s a real sense of trust here and that really plays out in this lovely scene where they physically act upon their love. For him to do that is a really big deal and Missandei knows that and doesn’t really care. She just loves him and that intimacy they’ve shared comes to a head. Missandei is always so official and straight and poised so to be vulnerable and see her human side of her, a little off balance, is kind of great and fun to play. She’s kept things very together to stay composed but this scene is the opposite of that. She’s quite clear about what she wants because she fears she’ll never have the chance to have that with him again,” the 28 year old actress said.

This was Nathalie’s 2nd nude scene in the show following season 4. She believes, to pull out these scenes, extra bit of nerves have to be displayed.

The Fast and Furious franchise actress said “You’re like, ‘Okay, I’m getting naked.’ And that was really strange for Jacob and I because we’ve danced around that scenario and we’ve become good mates and now we got to be naked around each other. But it was fine and, obviously, done really respectfully. Whether you’ve done it many times, or none at all, it’s a big deal. You feel like you’re giving something quite vulnerable and, yes, it’s hard.”

The scene instead of being a mere display of flesh is something beautiful. To establish a physical intimacy with a eunuch clearly symbolises the untainted love. It symbolises that in the middle of all the conspiracies, plots, backstabbings, war and other mishaps; there is still room for unconditional love.

“Amongst this chaos they’re like this beacon of something sweet and pure and beautiful. There’s love displayed in this show in so many ways but it’s normally so tragic. They have tragedy in their past but they found something useful from that and I love how the showrunners have decided to preserve that. It doesn’t happen often but when it does it really resonates.” she states.

The romance between the two, made its way to an apt fate. From here, their roads go different ways. Once Grey Worm goes for the Rock, it is tough coming back. But the fact is that they know it and they are ready to accept it, the way it is.
