Liam Cunningham says he would've loved to play the role of Tywin Lannister if he wasn't cast as Ser Davos

Game of Thrones is a show with a roster of characters, and there is quite an ambiguity with most of them, when it comes to their nature. Many of the characters cannot be classified clearly as good or bad, with some treading the line between the two, frequently, while others having shifted to the other after having started off as one. There are very few characters on the show that we can assign goodness to, and Ser Davos Seaworth is one of them. Liam Cunningham, who plays Ser Davos on Game of Thrones recently talked about how his character was “the conscience” of the show. Read on!

During a recent visit to Bangkok, Liam Cunningham talked to Says, about Ser Davos, who should sit on the throne according to him, and more. Speaking of Davos being the conscience of the show, he said :

“What’s interesting about Davos is that he has remained the same. I mean that in a good way – his loyalty, his decency, he’s got a conscience, he will stand up and say, ‘No, this is wrong. You can’t do that.’ He doesn’t care if it’s his life in danger and I think, in a way, he’s almost like the voice of the audience.

There’s a lot of morally ambiguous people on the show, so you need some characters to put their hand up to speak up for the audience like Davos and even Samwell Tarly, who are kinda like the ‘conscience’ of the show.”

Liam Cunningham was also asked which character he didn’t want to see dying on the show :

“Shireen.

I was sitting in my little room at home with a big pot of coffee and the door locked, and when I read that scene I just went, ‘WHAT? You gotta be kidding me! Noooo…!’ I couldn’t believe it.

I love doing those scenes with Shireen (Kerry Ingram), she’s a brilliant actress. When we said goodbye, I didn’t know she’d bought me a gift but I had a gift for her – a silver Irish-made stag like the one I gave her in the show. When I gave it to her, she pulled out a pillow and it had a stag embroidered on it. She also gave me a book that said ‘Grammar for Dummies’. She’s got a bit of a sense of humour, that girl.”

He also talked about how he would have liked to play Tywin Lannister if he hadn’t been cast as Davos :

“Brilliant character, who’s scared his children – Cersei, Jamie, and Tyrion – all very strong characters, and I love Charles Dance. I think he’s a magnificent actor as well and I think he portrayed it brilliantly. As an actor, when you watch someone working and doing something wonderful with a wonderful character, you should always go, “Oh, I’d love to do that!” It’s a good thing, coz you liked what he did.””

Talking about who he thinks will end up on the Iron Throne :

“Carice van Houten (actress who plays Melisandre) was asked that question awhile ago and I have to agree with her. She said, ‘I would like to live in a world that was ruled by Samwell Tarly.’ But she said there’s no way that’s gonna happen, and I think she’s probably right!

It looked like the guy at the beginning of this, Tyrion (Lannister, played by Peter Dinklage), would be the right man for the job, but he likes (mimes drinking) a little bit too much.

I think Jon Snow would be good, but he doesn’t strike me as someone who wants to. He’s had power thrust upon him. He never asked to be king, it was all the other people in the North who made him king and he has a responsibility to his people.

But with this show, who knows who’s gonna end up a king. It could be anybody. Or nobody.”
