Kristian Nairn tells investors to HODL in a new Cryptocurrency advertisement

It’s said giants are hard to get off your back. That is if you’re capable or lucky enough to get them on in the first place. Game of Throneshas turned out to be such an unparalleled phenomenon that it’s showered the cast and crew with never-like-before attention. But with great attention comes grave pretension. The show is one of those where people identify the actor with the character to an extent that it’s hard to see them in other roles.

Kristian Nairn, who played the universally loved Hodor in Game of Thrones, has held this in humor in his latest eToro advertisement for Cryptocurrency. The simple-minded stableboy of Winterfell became Bran Stark‘s legs as he carried the crippled boy on his back for the majority of the show.

His sacrificial act of holding-the-door to save Bran and Meera Reed from the Night Kingand the army of the dead resulted in worldwide mourning among the fans of the show.

His name, Hodor was derived from the only word that he could speak, Hodor, which was shockingly revealed to arrive fromHold-the-door and a paradox of past and present.HODL on to your seats, because on tops you might get some cryptocurrency investment tips.

eTorois a social trading and multi-asset brokerage company. It is a network of social trading with an array of investment and trading options. Cryptocurrency has been a rage in the past few years. Though an uncertain market, it has promised many a millionaire.

It broadly started in 2009, with the introduction of Bitcoin by an anonymous programmer group under the alias Satoshi Nakamoto. It was described as a ‘peer-to-peer electronic cash system’, a concept closely resembling peer-to-peer file sharing networks.

Nairn has featured in the ad which is by eToro. It starts off with the Irish actor sitting and reading a book titled, ‘How to get out of your old character.’ His agent is nearby in the same room and he calls for him to come, have a look at the offers for advertisements (which are pouring in by the way).

Kristian seems excited and looks intently towards him. The agent reads proposals, one after the other, all of them involving Kristian carrying something on his back and saying, ‘HO… .,’ until Nairn angers up to say, “Enough! No more saying that word ever again!”He immediately catches his composure and tells the agent, “I am a serious actor. I have depth. Why can’t you get me something with an office? With a tie, for example.”

The match seems set. Kristian finds an ad with the office and the tie. Ironically, he has tohodl here too, an elevator door to a bustle of office workers who are buzzing with the fear of crashing prices of Bitcoin (Cryptocurrency).

Nairn is holding the elevator door open, while people keep getting inside, constantly freaking, “Bitcoin is crashing! We have to sell!” “Bitcoin is a bubble.” Kristian is irritated yet keeps saying,”HODL HODL… HODL”

HODL is one of the most used terms in cryptocurrency markets. In a crude sense, it means to hold on to your crypto- even when the market suggests otherwise i.e. prices for a crypto rise or plummet. It originated from a typo in an online forum for the cryptocurrency.

It’s also used as an acronym in crypto, ‘Hold On for Dear Life.’ Cryptocurrency is a digital or virtual currency designed to work as a medium for exchange. It secures and verifies transactions as well as controls the creation of new units of any form of cryptocurrency. This is done byCryptography, a set of encryption practices or techniques to secure communication from third parties.

The most striking feature of cryptocurrency is that it is completely decentralized, thus there are no third parties or any central controlling authority. Every participant does the job of an authority. In Bitcoin, it is done via the Blockchain, a public ledger of all the transactions that have ever happened in a network- available to everyone.

Like HODL, there are many other terms popular in the cryptocurrency circles. One of them is ‘When Lambo?’ which in a way is connected with HODL. Roughly, it means ‘When will my crypto be worth enough to buy a Lamborghini?’

Peter Saddington was the first person to buy a Lamborghini with Bitcoin. Gradually it became a deal to buy a Lamborghini to show that you’ve made a fortune in cryptocurrency. He invested in Bitcoin in 2011 and bought the Lambo in 2017. This has inspired quite a few memes.

While Kristian Nairn‘s HODL ad about addressing FUD (Fear Uncertainty Doubt) has garnered a lot of attention and views for eToro and cryptocurrency, it clearly specifies ‘HODL is not an investment advice. Your capital is at risk.’ Also, eToro has mentioned that cryptocurrencies can fluctuate widely in price and are, therefore, not appropriate for all investors. So, do your research before investing and make an informed decision.
