Kristian Nairn was terrified of Isaac Hempstead-Wright walking in singing “SpongeBob SquarePants” while filming his Game of Thrones nude scene
Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?
On Game of Thrones, the cast, the crew, and the fans formed a huge family. The show was the subject of numerous controversies; however, the portrayal of sex scenes surprised many viewers, leading to discussions about the show’s depiction of sexuality. And a lot of actors on the set weren’t comfortable with that, including Kristian Nairn. His discomfort was heightened when he thought of his co-star, Isaac Hempstead-Wright, walking in on him in the act.
Kristian Nairn experienced significant nerves prior to filming his nude scene in Game of Thrones
Not everyone was a fan of the nude scenes in Game of Thrones. Kristian Nairn, who portrayed Hodor, faced a similar challenge when he agreed to his first-ever nude scene for the show. In his book Beyond the Throne (as mentioned in Vanity Fair), he recalled,
“I know this is going to hurt, but it’s my job, he’s saying without saying anything. I have agreed to this, after all. David and Dan did run through this with me at the Fitzwilliam Hotel. Why the hell did I say yes? I think. But the nude scene has been signed and sealed: the scene where Hodor emerges from bathing pools completely naked for ten, maybe fifteen, seconds. I will be undressed for less time than it would take me to text a friend, yet it has played on my mind for weeks.”
Kristian Nairn was scared of being seen by Isaac Hempstead-Wright
As Hodor and Bran, Nairn and Hempstead-Wright became the best of friends in real life as well. And Hempstead-Wright was pretty young at the time, which made the whole situation even more awkward. Nairn said:
“I take my robe off, but I can still sense myself standing as stiff as a sentry guard. All I need now is for Isaac to stampede in with his SpongeBob SquarePants earworm and his “Morning, Kristian!” cheeriness. I would die. Not to mention be reminded of the irritating fact that Isaac gets to turn up to set later than me every single day. Comparatively, he needs little makeup.”
