Aemond Targaryen is on another level in House of the Dragon season 2.

Whether purposefully or in collateral damage, he was able to rid the realm of Aegon II who he deemed an unworthy ruler. Showrunner Ryan Condal further mentioned how Aemond is one person you never want to have on your enemy list since he’s cunning enough to defeat you without a second thought.

For Ewan Mitchell to portray such an intricate character skillfully, he must have taken inspiration from some of the most amazing characters in the history of movies and shows.

In a recent roundtable conversation with Den of Geek, actor Ewan Mitchell shared his inspiration behind the iconic character Aemond in House of the Dragon. A stark change is seen in his demeanor after the events of season 1. Consequently, season 2 Aemond is more in control of himself and his actions. Moreover, he is well aware of his intentions and fearless in executing his will.

The actor shared that the lead character of The Sopranos has been a huge inspiration for Mitchell’s Aemond portrayal. He said,

“If [Gandolfini] wanted to feel intense in a scene or to have some things simmering underneath the surface, he would put a stone in his shoe, if I recall correctly. That was something that I wanted to do with Aemond – with putting this coin in my shoe.”

However, another eye-opening similarity between Soprano and Aemond is their love-hate relationship with their idol. What Aemond feels for Daemon, Tony Soprano feels for his father Johnny. They feel empowered when their idol wishes to harm them or kill them altogether. It instills them with pride thinking that they saw them as worthy opponents.

That’s exactly how Aemond feels when Daemon sends Blood and Cheese to kill him. He swells with pride knowing his idol sees him as a worthy threat. Daemon chooses to kill him in the comfort of his home rather than face him on the battlefield.
