Game of Thrones Season 7 ended with the big reveal of Jon Snow’s parentage. Although his rich heritage was hinted in the TV series a number of times, yet this had led many fans and theorists speculate how this can affect the end-game in the final season of Game of Thrones, and especially the budding relation of Jon and Daenerys Targaryen.

The final season is on the way and has been confirmed to air in the first half of 2019 by the HBO programming president Casey Bloys. Jon’s true heritage will possibly be revealed to him by Bran Stark and Samwell Tarly – the only ones who know the truth. But, it will surely impact the upcoming events of the series. We’ve got a number of theories on how this can go down. Read on.

How will Jon’s parentage prove to be a game changer?

Since, the first season of Game of Thrones we were led to believe that Daenerys and Viserys were the last living Targaryens but, Jon’s role – his heritage and the ups and downs in his journey were teased too. Let’s speculate on how this big reveal can prove to be a game changer for the current events of Game of Thrones.

It can break the trust Northerners place in Jon:

“The North Remembers”– it is an important motto for the Northerners but yet it signifies many things, one of them being the atrocities committed against their alleged house – House Stark. Rickard Stark was executed by the Mad King and his son Brandon was strangled to death. The same happened to Eddard Stark when he traveled south, although this time the Lannisters were involved. The Northerners despise both these houses. We all saw how furious Ser Yohn Royce was on Jon’s decision to meet Daenerys. He said, “A Targaryen cannot be trusted.” But, what will happen when they find out that the King in the North himself is a Targaryen?

It will weaken Daenerys’s claim to the Iron Throne:

After Robert’s Rebellion, the Targaryen dynasty was usurped. The Mad King, Rhaegar, Elia, and her two children – were all killed, while Viserys Targaryen and his younger sister spent their days in exile. The death of Viserys at the hands of Khal Drogo made Daenerys the last living heir of House Targaryen. She has since then vowed to take back her father’s throne. But, the recent revelation of Jon’s parentage will surely weaken her claim to the throne.

What effect can Jon’s heritage cause to his relationship with Dany?

Jon Snow is the true product of Ice (Lyanna Stark) and Fire (Rhaegar Targaryen) and possibly, according to Rhaegar “…his is the song of ice and fire.” Also according to Bran, “ He has never been a bastard. He is the heir to the Iron Throne.”  But, how will this big reveal go down on the blooming love of Jon and Dany? Let’s theorize.

Westeros won’t accept an incestuous relation:

In the Westerosi society, incestuous relation can’t be normalized. For instance, we saw how it went down for Cersei Lannister during the Faith Militant uprising in the fifth season. Also, we saw how much Joffrey and Tommen as kings were despised by people like Stannis Baratheon, Ned Stark, and others for being born of incest. It is entirely possible that Westeros will not accept this budding relation of Jon and Daenerys.

It can break Jon and Daenerys apart:

Targaryens Kings have been long practicing the tradition of marrying their sisters like Aegon the Conqueror and his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaeneys. Jon, who is both a Targaryen and a Stark, can probably believe it to be not normal to have a relation with Daenerys who is also his aunt, although the duo is in love. This can also be a part of the bitter-sweet ending that was promised!

The fear of producing a bastard:

Jon has been long been looked down by people such as Catelyn Stark, Alliser Thorne, and others in the TV series for being the bastard son of Eddard Stark. He believes it to be not less than a burden or a curse. In the first season, he travels to the Wall with his uncle Benjen Stark. He befriends Samwell Tarly and reveals to him that he couldn’t make an intimate relation with Ros, a prostitute from the North as he feared if he got her pregnant, another bastard could be born. Even in the books, while having a relationship with Ygritte up in the North, he has the same fears. With the hype of Targaryen children in the future season, it can be possible that Jon ends-up marrying Daenerys, not as a lover but to secure his child’s fate.

The Great War is the only thing that matters:

The Night King finally breached the Wall and is coming for all. In this war, no kingdoms matter neither does the Iron Throne. All that matters is the war between the living and the dead – the war for the fate and survival of the humanity. It is highly probable that Jon will have to make a difficult choice of either accepting or renouncing his new love for Daenerys. After all, the only thing that matters for all is the Great War – between the two mighty forces of Ice and Fire!
