The second season of House of the Dragon concluded with mixed reactions. Nonetheless, anticipation for the third season is still strong. It appears that HBO is developing it alongside other spinoffs. Production is expected to start in 2025, suggesting that preparations will likely commence by the end of this year. However, it seems like the cast members haven’t seen a script yet.

Matt Smith says House of the Dragon Season 3 scripts haven’t arrived yet

At a New York Comic Con panel on Sunday, actors Matt Smith (Daemon), Fabien Frankel (Criston), and Tom Glynn-Carney (Aegon II) fielded numerous questions from eager fans anticipating Season 3. On being asked about scripts for the third season, the trio replied (via Variety):

Tom Glynn-Carney: “Not a jot, not a letter. The longer they take, the longer we don’t have to read anything for a while.”

Matt Smith: “I’ve not heard hide nor hair. I don’t know about you guys. I’ve not heard a thing — (turning to Frankel) have you?”

Fabien Frankel: “I’ve heard some things that I couldn’t possibly share here.”

Did George R.R. Martin cause a delay in scripts?

The scripts for the third season of House of the Dragon were already in the works when Season 2 premiered, as confirmed by showrunner Ryan Condal. However, the storyline had deviated a lot from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, which did not sit well with the author, and he fired back at HBO in a deleted post. The delays might’ve been caused by script rewrites, to appease Martin, as well as to reduce possible backlash from the fans.
