HBO originally had four Game of Thrones animated spinoffs in their plans
House of the Dragon is currently HBO’s top priority project. But there were other ideas being developed besides the Targaryen civil war. Some are no longer in production, while others are in varying phases of development. A prequel series based on George R. R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg novels was the latest to be confirmed. Originally, HBO had more Game of Thrones animated spinoffs in mind.
HBO started with 4 animated Game of Thrones spinoffs
Martin recently confirmed that there are 3 animated Game of Thrones spinoffs in development, but initially, there were more. In a recent blog on his website Not A Blog, he said:
“As it happens, HBO and I have our own animated projects, set in the world of A SONG OF ICE & FIRE. None of them have been greenlit yet, but I think we are getting close to taking the next step with a couple of them. When this last round of development started a few years back, we had four ideas for animated shows, with some great talents attached. Writers rooms and summits, outline and scripts followed in due course… but, alas, two of the original projects were subsequently shelved.
However, Martin hasn’t given up on the canceled ones, yet.
Gone… but not forgotten (maybe)
George R. R. Martin prefers to call his canceled projects “shelved”, and he explained why, “Those of you who have read my reports in years past may recall that I prefer to say “shelved” rather than “killed,” as nothing is ever dead for good in Hollywood, and a project put on the shelf one year can be taken off the shelf a few years later). ( I still have hopes of presenting the stories that we shelved in another form, perhaps as graphic novels).”
