Fan theory talks about why Jon Snow didn't ride Drogon to escape the Frozen Lake in the latest episode
Game of Thrones season 7 episode 6, Beyond the Wall was a shock we weren’t expecting. With the loss of Daenerys’s dragon Viserion, the almost death of Jon Snow and his heroic refusal to take Dany’s hand and jump onto Drogon for escape, there was much to make us emotionally unstable.
However, fan theories have been raging since this episode and one of them tells us why Jon didn’t ride Drogon at the time. The reason for this isn’t stated in the show, but in George R.R Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series. One redditor has pointed out Dany’s words from A Dance With Dragons:
“All I know of dragons is what my brother told me when I was a girl, and some I read in books. But it is said that even Aegon the Conqueror never dared mount Vhagar or Meraxes, nor did his sisters ride Balerion the Black Dread. Dragons live longer than men, some for hundreds of years, so Balerion had other riders after Aegon died … but no rider ever flew two dragons.”
According to this theory, if Jon is supposed to ride Rhaegal, he might subconsciously have sensed the fact that he mustn’t ride Drogon. Since Jon has been confirmed to be a Targaryen, it makes sense for him to ride the dragon that’s named after his father Rhaegar Targaryen.
This also makes it clear that Jon might be a rider of the prophesied ‘the dragon has three heads’. It has now also been confirmed that Tyrion isn’t the third rider as many fans would like to believe, since Viserion has now gone over to the dark side having been taken by the Night King.
The prophecy of the three heads of the dragon is in reference to a vision Dany saw in the House of the Undying in the books, which included Rhaegar, but that wasn’t a part of the show. Prophecies are often misinterpreted on Game of Thrones as we’ve seen through Melisandre’s predictions, but if Jon were to ride Rhaegal, it would be a pretty cool sight.
Hopefully, we get to see that in the finale episode of season 7, the Dragon and the Wolf. Game of Thrones season 7 finale airs this Sunday on HBO at 9 pm.
