Game of Thrones finally gave us the death of a major character during the season 7 finale
Game of Thrones has always been known for its unpredictability, where it doesn’t matter how big a character is or how good he or she is. If a character makes a mistake, death comes knocking on the door. Best examples would be the deaths of Ned Stark, Khal Drogo, Robb and Catelyn Stark and who can forget the shocking death of Oberyn Martell.
Each of these characters was considered to be big and strong and we knew that such characters never die and that’s where Game of Thrones changed the game.
However, since some time, this unpredictability seems to be missing in the show. Even during season 7, there were a number of moments where a major character was in danger but the fans weren’t worried for the character.
Take for example the scene where Jaime Lannister drowned after he tried to attack and kill Daenerys Targaryen. We could see him sinking but most of us knew that he wouldn’t die and he did survive in the next episode. Same is the case with what happened during the battle beyond the Wall and this has made us a bit comfortable while watching the series as we know that a major character won’t die so easily.
And that’s why the latest episode felt so good, when we found out that Sansa, Arya and even Bran had teamed up to fool Littlefinger into believing that he was successful in isolating Sansa from her family and creating a conflict between Sansa and Arya.
In the Great Hall of Winterfell, Littlefinger expected Sansa to pass the death sentence for Arya, but the tables turned as the Stark siblings teamed up and killed Littlefinger instead, with Arya using the Valyrian Steel dagger to slash his throat.
Over the years, Littlefinger has used chaos to turn things in his favour and he was pretty good at it. However, he was mentoring Sansa and he made a big mistake of underestimating her and that’s what eventually led to his downfall.
During the 7th season, Littlefinger was constantly whispering in Sansa’s ears to try to move her away from her family, but we saw in season 6 that Sansa had changed a lot and she had finally learned how to play the Game of Thrones.
She was able to see what Littlefinger was planning and using the advice that she got from Littlefinger, she secretly teamed up with her siblings to set him up. Sansa effortlessly played Littlefinger’s game till the end and the moment when she revealed the truth, Littlefinger was stunned as he never saw it coming.
This was the first time we saw Littlefinger so scared and crying for his life. He realized that his end was near and we finally got to see his real self.
Finally, Sansa gave the order and Arya swiftly killed him. I would’ve loved it if Sansa had followed Ned Stark’s advice: “The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword.” However, there’s nothing to complain over here and it was good to see the teamwork between Arya and Sansa.
It was poetic justice to see Littlefinger being killed with the same weapon, the one which he used to start the fight between House Stark and Lannister during season 1. Now that he is dead, it will interesting to see if Arya uses his face in season 8.
