Game of Thrones writer George R. R. Martin is one of the most accomplished novelists today, with some of the best-selling books under his belt. The veteran author is already associated with a bunch of new shows, including Game of Thrones prequel House of The Dragon.

Martin has also made his mark in the gaming industry with the critically acclaimed video game Elden Ring, which has created quite a buzz on the internet and is currently one of the most-played gaming titles over various platforms. However, all of his work hasn’t been adapted into the game’s storyline, as revealed by Elden Ring’s director, Hidetaka Miyazaki.

In a recent interview with the New Yorker, Miyazaki revealed he placed some key restraints over what Martin was allowed to do. He said, “In our games, the story must always serve the player experience. If [Martin] had written the game’s story, I would have worried that we might have to drift from that. I wanted him to be able to write freely and not to feel restrained by some obscure mechanic that might have to change in development.”

“That power of imagination is important to me,” he said. “Offering room for user interpretation creates a sense of communication with the audience—and, of course, communication between users in the community. This is something that I enjoy seeing unfold with our games, and that has continued to influence my work.”
