Interview
Game of Thrones star Conleth Hill was very depressed over shaving his head for playing Lord Varys

Game of Thrones had some of the most amazing actors in its cast, and the casting was so on-point that many of the stars became synonymous with the characters they played on-screen. Conleth Hill was so fabulous in his role as Lord Varys, today we can’t even imagine anyone else playing the role of Master of Whispers so perfectly. Even though Hill gained widespread recognition for his character on Game of Thrones, he was forever unhappy about a specific feature of his role. Showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss wanted Varys to be bald, and that made Hill feel really depressed.
In James Hibberd’s novel, Fire Cannot Kill A Dragon, Conleth gave a candid interview in which he revealed shaving his head made him “very depressed.” He confessed to having some initial reluctance about playing Varys, and thought the show would be about “Dungeons and Dragons.” Although originally taping for the role as King Robert, he revealed the producers called him back to read for Lord Varys.
The actor admitted he thought it was “nice bull***t” when the producers said they would come back to him about playing King Robert. When Conleth read for the role of the Master of Whispers, they asked if he could shave his head, to which he revealed he’d never shaved his head before and stated: ”I was very depressed.”
James Hibberd’s novel has revealed various secrets about HBO’s famous fantasy epic previously, such as the show’s botched pilot episode. Do you think Varys would have looked better with silver locks? Tell us in the comments below!
