George R.R. Martin explained why dragons in Game of Thrones are more practical than other shows
Readers of George R. R. Martin‘s books and viewers of his television shows have been utterly captivated by the characters and creatures that inhabit one of the most beloved fantastical worlds ever created. The world of Westeros and all of its accompanying stories are like his children, as he has said a few times already. He also occasionally finds himself liking his kids “more” than others.
George R. R. Martin says dragons on other shows “would never get off the ground”
Martin understands his dragons well, but he dislikes those in other fantasy shows. He said in a House of the Dragon featurette (via CinemaBlend):
“You see some of these dragons in some of these shows, and they’ve got like little bitty wings and they’re big fat things. They would never get off the ground. The aerial dynamics just don’t work. They have to have very large wings and a relatively slender kind of serpentine body, a long tail, a long neck. They’re more like pterodactyl dinosaurs.”
George R.R. Martin likes House of the Dragon’s dragons the most
Martin discussed his thoughts on the depictions of dragons in both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon during a special FYC screening of the latter earlier this year. The author admitted he preferred the dragons on House of The Dragon more, as “They had personality. They came alive. It came as great satisfaction to me.”

The dragons on Game of Thrones, he continued, “were like all the same.”
