Twelve years have passed since the last book in the novel series of Game of Thrones was published by author George R.R. Martin. Apart from writing The Winds of Winter, his next novel, he has kept himself occupied with a variety of other projects. He used to schedule releases, but soon found he couldn’t follow through. He stopped offering his fans any hope as a result.

George R. R. Martin tells fans not to pester him about Winds of Winter’s release

The Winds of Winter has been a long time coming, but Martin still isn’t sure if he can finish it by 2025. In an author-to-author talk with Shadowhunters writer Cassandra Clare, who is about to release her book in March 2025, he said (via Reddit), “The really depressing thing is that still may beat The Winds of Winter, who the hell knows?”

“I’ve been working…I’m 12 years late with The Winds of Winter, as we know. I’m just gonna put it right out there, you guys don’t have to pester me about it.”

Yes, George R. R. Martin is still writing Winds of Winter

Despite his extremely slow speed, Martin has assured his fans that he is still working on his highly awaited book. In a previous excerpt on his blog Not a Blog, he wrote:

“And, yes, yes, of course, I’ve been working on WINDS OF WINTER. Almost every day. Writing, rewriting, editing, writing some more. Making steady progress. Not as fast as I would like.. certainly not as fast as YOU would like… but progress nonetheless.”
