This article contains SPOILERS from the latest episode, Eastwatch. Please turn back if you haven’t yet watched it. The latest Game Of Thrones episode was filled with reunions and a comeback but it also shared a massive piece of information about Jon Snow and if you weren’t paying attention, you might’ve easily missed it.
We are talking about the scene involving Samwell and Gilly. The scene began with Gilly bombarding Samwell with some boring facts about the Citadel and the Sept of Baelor that a High Septon named Maynard had recorded in a book and Samwell was visibly irritated with the facts but he was also trying his best to keep his temper under control. Just when we thought that it would be another random scene in Oldtown, Gilly asked Samwell the meaning of the word “annulment“. Samwell answered her query by letting her know that, “it’s when a man sets aside his lawful wife.”
Gilly then told Sam that Maynard had issued an annulment for a Prince Ragger and re-married him to someone else at the same time in a secret ceremony in Dorne! That’s when Samwell lost his patience and went on a rant about how Archmaester Ebrose gave him the task of recording the annulments and bowel movements of a septon, while the secrets to defeat the Night King lie somewhere in the Citadel.
This is a massive bombshell as the show has finally cleared all the doubts regarding Jon Snow’s parents. We came to know in season 6 that Jon Snow was the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. However, there was one issue regarding his birth that was still unaddressed and the fans had a huge discussion regarding it as it still wasn’t clear whether Jon Snow was a bastard or not. Rhaegar Targaryen was married to Elia Martell and many people were of the opinion that even though Jon was Rhaegar’s son, he would still be a bastard.
The scene also made it clear that Rhaegar didn’t actually kidnap Lyanna Stark and that they loved each other and had eloped together. We have been hearing since the start of the series that Rhaegar had kidnapped Lyanna and finally, we know that it wasn’t true.
This also means that the secret wedding was the reason for the downfall of House Targaryen as the news of Rhaegar kidnapping Lyanna was the primary reason that gave rise to Robert’s Rebellion.
This also explains why the members of the Kingsguard were present outside the Tower of Joy, which is located in Dorne, rather than fighting against Robert Baratheon or being with Aerys Targaryen in King’s Landing. Here’s the passage from the books which tells us what happened at the Tower of Joy.
