Viserys’ prophetic dream about Aegon the Conqueror’s crown comes true in House of The Dragon Episode 9

The penultimate episode of Game of Thrones prequel House of The Dragon is finally here, and it is every bit as chaotic as it should be under the guise of a forced peace. The Greens have successfully taken hold of King’s Landing, keeping Viserys’ death a secret from Rhaenyra. After Viserys’ crown goes missing, as Rhaenys steals it with Erryk Cargyll before fleeing King’s Landing, Aegon II is crowned with Aegon the Conqueror’s original coronet. This was foreshadowed earlier in the season, when Viserys recalls his dream after the hunt in episode 3.

In his drunken state, Viserys confides in his wife, Alicent, about his doubts over his choice of heir. He says, “Many in my line have been dragonriders, very few among us have been dreamers. What is the power of dragons next to the power of prophecy?”

He goes on to talk about his dream of having a son born wearing Aegon the Conqueror’s crown, when Rhaenyra was younger. Viserys never had that dream again, and to keep the kingdom united, he named Rhaenyra his heir. However, after having Aegon II, he confessed to having doubts.

People who have the blood of Old Valyria are no strangers to seeing the future in their dreams, known as Dragon Dreams. Aegon the Conqueror’s dream, A Song of Ice and Fire, describes his descendant saving humanity from a long night. Daenys Targaryen, also known as Daenys the Dreamer, saw the Doom of Valyria in her dreams. By warning her family, the Targaryens were able to survive the cataclysm. Maybe Viserys was a dreamer after all?
