House of The Dragon stars hint that the relationship between Alicent and Rhaenyra is “a little bit more” than friendship
Game of Thrones fans are all hyped up about the new prequel House of The Dragon. The premiere received plenty of positive views, and the recent World Premiere was attended and praised by some of the most renowned critics. Things are looking quite bright for the tale of the Targaryen family, as well as for those who were directly affected by the show’s two central characters, Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower.
According to the show’s young stars Milly Alcock and Emily Carey, who portray the younger versions of Rhaenyra and Alicent respectively, the relationship between the two as showcased in the first episode is “a little bit more” than friendship. Alcock joked during a roundtable press interview with Insider, “I’m just actually in love with Emily and so I think that’s it.”
Carey joined in, “It’s something we brought up with Clare Kilner, one of the directors we also work with for the younger version of the characters. It was something I was immediately conscious of when I read the script as a queer woman myself.”
“I think any woman could think back to the best friend that they had at 14 years old, and it’s a relationship and a closeness unlike any other,” Carey added. “You do toe the line between platonic and romantic.”
“Milly always says it’s like a tactile closeness and emotional closeness,” Carey said. “Especially when it’s put in the context of this world where they are the only two young girls in the Red Keep. It’s 100% something we were conscious of. And so if it reads on screen, it was purposeful.”
“These women aren’t given the privilege to know what choices they have because of the world that they live in,” Alcock concluded. “That’s the theme that runs through this entire story, and Alicent and Rhaenyra’s relationship is a prime example of it.”
This side of Alicent and Rhaenyra’s relationship is yet to be explored in the series, and might add fuel to the events that’ll unfold in future.
