Nikolaj Coster-Waldau's Danish film Suicide Tourist gets many international deals
Films and TV shows entertain people throughout the world. Hence, there’s no doubt that both these screen properties attract a lot of trade and money. The success of Game of Thrones all over the globe has meant big rewards for its production network HBO. In the case of films, the rights for overseas distribution are usually handled by different media companies. Game of Thrones actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who played Jaime Lannister on the show, starred in a Danish film last year by the name of Suicide Tourist. It’s slated to release in the US and many other regions this year with a host of international deals, as reported by Screen Daily.
Charades, a Paris-based company, had acquired the world sales rights of the film; it has now made many international deals for the EFM (European Film Market) sales title. While North American rights have been acquired by Screen Media, rights for Spain, CIS and Baltics, Israel, and the Middle East are now with B-team, Paradise, Forum, and Empire respectively. That’s not all. Deals have further closed in Greece (Spentzos); Hungary, former Yugoslavia and Bulgaria (AQS); and Taiwan (Spotlight). It will release in Germany in June 2020 and its German co-producer DCM is distributing the film there. Scanbox Entertainment has distributed the film in Scandinavia.
Suicide Tourist, known as Selvmords Turisten in Denmark, is a story of an insurance investigator, Max. His search for a man leads him to a hotel. Not an ordinary one. It provides a secretive facility to commit fantasy suicides to its guests. While in the hotel, Max is torn apart by his own existential crisis and forced to question his perception of reality.
Jonas Alexander Arnby has directed the film written by Rasmus Birch. The producers are Eva Jakobsen, Mikkel Jersin, and Katrin Pors through their production house, Snowglobe. The ensemble cast includes Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Robert Aramayo (who played young Ned Stark in Game of Thrones).
Seth Needle, a top official at Screen Media said, “The combination of Nikolaj’s complex performance and Jonas’ vivid filmmaking makes this a film you’re unable to look away from start to finish. We’re thrilled to be working with all involved.”
The director, Jonas Arnby, also echoed the same sentiment. “I am very excited that Suicide Tourist has found its home in the US with Screen Media – a company that has great experience in elevating films for the US market and that will be a great platform for the film to reach an American audience. I look forward to the collaboration with Screen Media ahead of the US release this year,” he said.
Suicide Tourist released after the end of a long run for Nikolaj with Game of Thrones. His upcoming films include the Danish drama based on the Copenhagen terrorist attacks of 2015, The Day We Died, and the American-Canadian crime thriller, The Silencing.
