HBO will not make any Game of Thrones sequel, confirms top executive
However much we want to know where Arya Stark is off to, chances are that we won’t, ever. HBO’s Programming president Casey Bloys told Hollywood Reporter that they have absolutely no further plan to expand on the Game of Thrones storyline into a sequel. Instead, HBO will be turning its full focus on the prequel series based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy world in the offing.
Bloys was asked whether they are considering taking up the journeys of any Game of Thrones character going forward, specifically about Arya’s voyage to “the west of Westeros”. His answer is pretty forceful: “Nope. Nope. Nope. No.”
There are mainly two reasons HBO is not keen on doing any sequel with the existing characters.
First, they want to give GoT showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss their artistic dues and not mess with the world they had so meticulously created.
Arya’s voyage won’t be getting any new show as so many fans are asking.
Bloys said, “I do want this show — this Game of Thrones, Dan and David’s show — to be its own thing. I don’t want to take characters from this world that they did beautifully and put them off into another world with someone else creating it. I want to let it be the artistic piece they’ve got.”
Also, HBO does not want the prequels to be shadowed by Game of Thrones and is looking to build them up as completely different shows, albeit based on the same fantastical world. In Bloys’ words: “George has a massive, massive world; there are so many ways in. That’s why we’re trying to do things that feel distinct — and to not try and redo the same show. That’s probably one of the reasons why, right now, a sequel or picking up any of the other characters doesn’t make sense for us.”

Well, all of us would like to know a lot more about all the surviving characters. But HBO’s stance makes sense. Game of Thrones has ended. Now our watch begins for the prequels.
