Game of Thrones writer Bryan Cogman will work on Amazon's Lord of the Rings

On May 20th 2019, on the day of the Game of Thrones series finale, George R R Martin took to his “Not a Blog” to express his feelings about the show. In this post, he decided to tell us about the future journeys of the cast and the rest of the team of Game of Thrones.

We already knew that David Benioff and D. B. Weiss are making the next Star Wars films. What we did not know was that Bryan Cogman, the third writer/showrunner for Game of Thrones, who Martin very fondly calls “the third head of the dragon”, is going to start his work on a “big Tolkien project” with Amazon.

Martin’s exact words were:

“David and Dan are going on to STAR WARS and other projects beyond that. Amazon scooped up Bryan Cogman, and put him to work on developing shows of his own, as well as helping out on their big Tolkien project.”

Reportedly, Amazon is spending an insane amount of money (approximately $1 billion to make five seasons as per its deal struck with Tolkien estate) to make it. Bryan Cogman is the writer of some brilliantly made Game of Thrones’ episodes like “The Bear and the Maiden Fair”, “The Rains of Castamere”, “The Mountain and the Viper” and the very recent fan favourite, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”.

After this, Variety also confirmed that Cogman was on board, alongside the writing team of JD Payne and Patrick McKay, for the show.

The details about the Lord of the Rings show are still hazy except the fact it will explore new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Fellowship of the Ring”. However, recently Amazon confirmed that it might be set during the “Second Age of Middle-earth”.

The show is expected to start filming by later this year. What do you guys think? Excited about the Middle Earth Saga coming to TV? Talk to us in the comments, down below!
