Game of Thrones viewership has increased by more than 50% since Coronavirus outbreak
These are the desperate and unprecedented times for mankind. Nothing has quite affected people and countries like Coronavirus has done. Almost all the countries across the globe are in lockdown which means more people are at home than at any stage in history. That also means most of those people are turning to Television and other streaming mediums for their entertainment. Cheryl Idell, Chief Research Officer, WarnerMedia Entertainment & Direct-to-Consumer has recently shared some interesting statistics about the recent resurgence in viewership. Read on!
Idell recently wrote an article on Medium and gave the news that overall U.S. TV viewing (traditional + connected devices + smart TV) grew by nearly 20% across the industry last week. She also wrote that this increase in viewership kept on getting more prominent throughout the week.
Westworld whose latest season started airing recently remained the number 1 show on the platform. HBO’s blockbuster Game of Thrones which completed its run last year too showed the spike of over 50 percent as per the latest data. Viewership was never quite an issue for Thrones and its quite wonderful to see it still garnering audiences. Big Little Lies and Chernobyl too showed similar growths.
With more time in hand, people seem to be turning nostalgic as well as HBO’s legacy series like The Wire, The Sex And The City and The Sopranos too showed significant upturns. Movies like Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw and X-Men: Dark Phoenix too saw the rise in viewerships.
People also turned towards movies like Contagion which has seen a phenomenal rise in interest across the globe. The movie was based on the spread of a virus and viewers seem to be relating to it big time. HBO’s documentary Ebola: The Doctor’s Story also showed 7 times more viewership than past weeks.
All of the above data suggests that there is enough content available for people to stay entertained and they are having a good time as well. However, it is still going to be a long haul and it’s important that networks and streaming sites maintain the viewer’s interests.
