15 details you might have missed in Game of Thrones season 7 episode 5: Eastwatch

Game Of Thrones season 7 is fast racing towards the finishing line with the 5th episode airing this Sunday. We now have just 2 episodes remaining, before the long wait for Game Of Thrones season 8 begins. The 7th season has just 7 episodes and considering the time crunch, all the events are happening at an accelerated pace, except those involving the White Walkers as they seem to be going in circles since the last 1-2 seasons.

The 5th episode was filled with reunions, though it would’ve been better if the showrunners had given them a proper treatment, rather than just finishing one quickly and moving over to the next one. The first interaction between Jon and Drogon was wonderful to watch and we got to see Gendry for the first time after season 3. Even Littlefinger showed us that he’s still good at manipulating people and he’s determined to isolate Sansa from her family.

As usual, we will be talking about some of the details from the latest episode that you might’ve missed. You can also check our analysis of episode one, two, three, four.

1. A new addition to the opening credits scene

During the opening credits for the latest episode, we got to see a new addition and it was the Night’s Watch castle of Eastwatch-by-the-Sea, which was also the name of the episode. So far in the series, we have hardly heard about Eastwatch and this was the first time we got to see the Night’s Watch castle and it was nice to see that the show also introduced it during the opening credits.

2. Daenerys refers to her Break the Wheel speech

After defeating the Lannisters and the Tarlys, the Dothraki round-up all the surviving people and she tells them that Cersei might’ve spoken many things about her but they aren’t true and she adds, “All I want to destroy is the wheel that has rolled over rich and poor to the benefit of no one but the Cersei Lannisters of the world.”

She has said something similar to Tyrion previously in the 5th season. During the scene, Daenerys asked Tyrion to advise her as she wanted to rule Westeros and Tyrion tried to convince her to stay in Essos as he knew that taking over Westeros was going to be difficult without the support of the powerful houses. That’s when she said:

“Lannister, Baratheon, Stark, Tyrell — they’re all just spokes on a wheel. This one’s on top and that one’s on top and on and on it spins, crushing those on the ground. I’m not going to stop the wheel. I’m going to break the wheel.”Lannister, Baratheon, Stark, Tyrell — they’re all just spokes on a wheel. 3. Another reference to Jon being a Targaryen

After Daenerys returned to Dragonstone, she landed near Jon Snow and Drogon started charging towards Jon, but Jon stood firm and he took out a glove and patted Drogon and there seemed to be a connection between them. Even Daenerys seemed to be surprised, seeing how friendly Drogon was with Jon.

This seems to be another hint at Jon being a Targaryen. All the fans know that Jon is a Targaryen, but no one in Westeros has an idea about that, except for Bran Stark. We don’t know how exactly Jon is going to find out that he’s a Targaryen, but it’s possible that it might happen during an unexpected scene like this. Most fans would love to see Bran telling Jon about it but we really can’t say what might happen.

4. The Night’s Watch has already sent a Wight to King’s Landing in season 1

Jon received a letter from Bran, warning him about the White Walkers and Jon immediately informed everyone at Dragonstone about it and Tyrion told Jon that everyone would believe in White Walkers, if someone brought a Wight as a proof and Jon agreed to this.

However, it’s interesting to see that Jon didn’t remind Tyrion that the Night’s Watch had already done that in the first season. During the first season, a fought against a Wight and somehow managed to save the Lord Commander and before Jon burned the Wight, he managed to chop-off one hand. Later Jeor Mormont told Jon that he had sent Ser Alliser Thorne to King’s Landing with the hand, so that the King would realize that the White Walkers were real. However, it seems that the show forgot about it and Ser Alliser returned to Castle Black in the 4th season and there was no mention about what happened when he went to King’s Landing.

However, in the books, Thorne reached King’s Landing and he asked for an audience with Tyion Lannister, who was the acting Hand of the King. Tyrion made Thorne wait for a long time before meeting him and by that time, the hand of the Wight had decomposed. Tyrion mocked him and there was no one who believed Alliser Thorne. So it’s funny to see that Tyrion is the one who asked Jon to bring a Wight to King’s Landing as a proof.

5. Davos joked about Gendry rowing all these seasons

Once Tyrion went to meet Jaime, Ser Davos headed towards Flea Bottom, where he managed to find Gendry. “I wasn’t sure I’d find you,” he said. “Thought you might still be rowing.”

This is a reference to the joke that’s extremely popular among the fans. We had last seen Gendry in the 3rd season, whe he was seeing rowing away from Dragonstone and over the years, fans started wondering if he was still rowing somewhere around Dragonstone. Even Joe Dempsie joked about this few years ago.

6. Gendry’s war hammer

In the latest episode we met Gendry and we also found out that he preferred using a War hammer and that’s an interesting choice of a weapon as Robert Baratheon was known for using a war hammer and he even killed Rhaegar Targaryen using his war hammer and we can see that he has already put the Baratheon sigil on his war hammer. The war hammer that Robert used was so huge that Ned Stark couldn’t even wield it.

Gendry showed us during the episode that he has his father’s strength as he killed two Gold Cloaks with his hammer with much ease. It will be interesting to see how helpful his war hammer will be once he faces the army of the dead.

7. Another guest appearance

While leaving King’s Landing, Davos came across two soldiers who asked him what he was doing over there and just when Davos had successfully managed to fool them, Tyrion appeared and it’s easy for anyone to identify the Imp. As a result, Gendry had to kill both of them. English actor and comedian, Kevin Eldon was one of the soldier and this wasn’t his first appearance on the show. We last saw him in the 6th season, in Braavos, where he was part of the theater group and he played the role of Ned Stark.

8. Cersei’s pregnancy

Cersei surprised Jaime and the fans by announcing that she was pregnant. Jaime was very happy to hear this news but he an Cersei should be really careful as things might not end well for them. In the 5th season, we were shown a prophecy by Maggy the witch, who told young Cersei that she would have 3 children. So far, everything that was mentioned in the prophecy turned out to be true and we know that Cersei’s 3 children are dead.

“You will never wed the Prince, you will wed the King…You’ll be Queen, for a time. Then comes another — younger, more beautiful — to cast you down and take all you hold dear…The King will have 20 children, and you will have three…Gold will be their crowns, gold their shrouds.”

So it might happen that either Cersei dies before giving birth to her child or the child dies. Either way, it’s not going to be a happy ending for Cersei.

9. Bonding between Jon and Gendry

Davos made it clear to Gendry that he wasn’t going to reveal that he was Robert Baratheon’s bastard, as Davos didn’t want Jon to worry about harbouring a dead king’s Bastard. However, Gendry chose to ignore Ser Davos’ advice and introduced himself as Robert’s bastard and he said that they should trust each other just as their fathers trusted each other. They quickly bonded with each other and then Jon told Gendry that he was a lot leaner and Gendry replied by saying that Jon was shorter.

This interaction reminds us of Ned Stark and Robert Baratheon in the first season. During the first episode of the series, Robert reached Winterfell and when he met Ned, he said that Ned had become fat and Ned just looked at Robert, indicating that he should look at himself and then they had a nice laugh about it.

10. Good fortune in the wars to come

Before Jon left dragonstone, he Jon tells Daenerys “I wish you good fortune in the wars to come.”

This is not the first time someone has said this line in the show. We have heard it multiple times till now and it’s interesting to know that, it usually is followed by a death.

We saw Mance Rayder saying this to Stannis Baratheon, just before Stannis burned Mance. Mance was given the option to bend the knee or die and he chose the later option.

We then saw the line being said by Ser Arthur Dayne during the Tower of Joy scene. When Ned Stark reached the Tower, he met Ser Arthur and on asking where his sister was, Dayne replied, “I wish you good fortune in the wars to come.”

Even Benjen Stark used an incomplete version of the same quote when he dropped off Bran and Meera at the Wall. “I wish you both good fortune.”

11. Gilly accidentally revealed that Rhaegar had married Lyanna Stark

We had another reference to Jon Snow being a Targaryen in the latest episode, when Gilly asked Samwell about the meaning of the word “annulment.” Samwell who was already frustrated with the way the people at the Citadel were ignoring the threat from the White Walkers told Gilly that, “it’s when a man sets aside his lawful wife.”

Gilly then told Sam that Maynard had issued an annulment for a Prince Ragger and re-married him to someone else at the same time in a secret ceremony in Dorne! That’s when Samwell lost his patience and went on a rant about how Archmaester Ebrose gave him the task of recording the annulments and bowel movements of a septon, while the secrets to defeat the Night King lie somewhere in the Citadel.

This revelation has now confirmed that Jon Snow isn’t a bastard and he has the strongest claim to the Iron Throne! It also makes it clear that Rhaegar didn’t actually kidnap Lyanna Stark. We know that Robert’s Rebellion started because people thought Rhaegar had abducted Lyanna, which we now know wasn’t true. So the Targaryen rule came to an end because people didn’t know the truth.

12. I’m tired of reading about the achievements of better men

Samwell was frustrated with the way the Citadel was ignoring the White Walkers and he decided that he couldn’t stay there any longer. He visited the library and took away some books and scrolls and while leaving, Gilly asked him if he was sure about leaving the Citadel. Sam replied, “I’m tired of reading about the achievements of better men”

Samwell’s father had said the same thing in previous season, when Samwell reached Horn Hill and was having dinner with Randyll. “I thought the Night’s Watch might make a man of you,” Randyll told Samwell. “Something resembling a man at least. You’ve managed to stay soft and fat, your nose buried in books. Spending your life reading about the achievements of better men. I’d wager you still can’t sit a horse, or wield a sword.”

13. The letter that Littlefinger wanted Arya to read

We saw that Arya didn’t fully trust Sansa and she even started keeping a watch over Littlefinger to see if he was up to anything fishy and she found that Littlefinger had asked Maester Wolkan to search a letter. Lettlefinger hid the letter in his room and left and that’s when Arya entered his room secretly and searched for the letter. She didn’t look happy after reading the letter and here’s what was written in it:

“Robb, I write to you with a heavy heart. Our good king Robert is dead, killed from wounds he took in a boar hunt. Father has been charged with treason. He conspired with Robert’s brothers against my beloved Joffrey and tried to steal his throne. The Lannisters are treating me very well and provide me with every comfort. I beg you: come to King’s Landing, swear fealty to King Joffrey and prevent any strife between the great houses of Lannister and Stark.”

This letter was written by Sansa in the first season and was addressed to Robb Stark. In the first season, after Ned Stark was taken as a hostage, Cersei had urged Sansa to write a letter to Robb Stark telling her that Ned’s fate depended on Robb Stark’s response to the letter that she would send.

When the scroll reached Winterfell, Maester Luwin was able to see through it and he told Robb, “It’s your sister’s hand but the Queen’s words.” Sadly, Arya has no idea about any of this and she is going to think that Sansa had called her father a traitor and took Joffrey’s side.

14. Jorah and Thoros’ reunion

At the end of the episode, Jon Snow reached Eastwatch, where he was told by Tormund that there were other people who wanted to go North of the Wall. The scene resulted in a number of reunions. Jon met the Hound, Gendry met the Brotherhood without Banners and Ser Jorah met Thoros of Myr.

While Gendry was talking about what the Brotherhood did to him, Jorah interrupted by saying, “Thoros, I hardly recognized you.”

Many fans might’ve wondered how they knew each other, as we never saw the two meeting in the series. The book readers, however must’ve rememberd that the two of them fought together during the Greyjoy Rebellion.

The rebellion took place 9 years before the events in the first episode occured and it started because Balon Greyjoy declared himself the King of the Iron Islands. At the siege of Pyke, Jorah and Thoros were the first men through the breach when the walls came down.

In season 3, Jorah talked about the Greyjoy Rebellion and had said “Thoros of Myr went in alone waving that flaming sword of his”.

15.  Jeor Mormont’s dying wish

This detail was noticed by reddit user Waxahachie_Phil, who talked about how Jorah voluntering to go beyond the Wall fulfilled Jeor Mormont’s last wish. In the books, while Lord Commander Jeor Mormont was dying, he told Samwell to find his son Jorah and ask him to take the Black. Things didn’t end the same way for Jeor Mormont in the show, as Sam took Gilly and her child and ran away before anyone could catch them.

Jorah hasn’t joined the Night’s Watch but he signed up for the work that’s usually done by the members of the Night’s Watch and in a way it fulfills his father’s last wish.
