The kiss between Rhaenyra and Mysaria was very challenging to make it feel earned and real, says House of the Dragon director
What did that one kiss mean for Rhaenyra and Mysaria?
Rhaenyra and Mysaria’s newfound dynamic is not easy to come by. The showrunners worked hard towards establishing that equation and association not just through loneliness, but also through their similar personalities.
After Rhaenys passes away, Rhaenyra has no female model to look up to for advice and support. She needs a guiding light who can understand her pains and help her be on the right path. This is when Mysaria comes into the picture and truly offers Rhaenyra her support and expertise. Talking about the Black Queen’s mindset, director Andrij Parekh says,
“Rhaenyra’s husband has left her, she’s feeling completely isolated and alone; she has all these men calculating [moves] without necessarily with her input.”

Andrij Parekh talks about Rhaenyra and Mysaria’s kiss
House of the Dragon season 2 episode 6 brings about a turning point in Rhaenyra’s life as she finally feels the masses support her. All thanks to Mysaria who plans how to turn the small filk against the Greens. When everything else is falling apart around her and she feels like nobody trusts in her abilities, Mysaria offers a few comforting words to reassure Rhaenyra.
Moreover, he shares how the kiss was one of the most challenging scenes to bring about in this episode. He told The Hollywood Reporter,
“The scenes that were challenging for me, for various reasons, were the burning of Darklyn (Anthony Flanagan) when he attempted to ride Seasmoke. And Seasmoke finding his rider. And the kiss between Rhaenyra and Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno) — that was very challenging to make that feel earned and real.”
At the same time, it felt natural to bring the two women together in their mutual search for love and care. People have ignored and overlooked them for far too long. As they share their past traumas and the situations that brought them where they are, Rhaenyra and Mysaria realize what they have with each other. Parekh further reveals,
“I think it’s a surprise. But I also don’t want it to feel like it’s an outlier and for it to fit into the emotional truth, which is linear, which is that Rhaenyra has been abandoned by her husband. And that kiss hopefully feels like it’s earned, and real and emotionalized.”
Their kiss gets interrupted by an urgent message. Consequently, we will have to wait and see till next week what happens to their possible romance. Rhaenyra and Mysaria have to navigate the perils of forbidden romance as the war for power and the Iron Throne rages on.
