“I didn’t know what I was doing,” says Stephen Dillane (Stannis) about his time on Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones has had many a characters that have tried to grab hold of the Crown, but there was one that listened to a strange red woman, burned his own daughter alive, and yet got no closer to the Throne than anybody else. We’re talking about Stannis Baratheon, of course. In a recent interview with The Times, Stephen Dillane, who played the role of Stannis, spilled the beans on his time on the show. Read on!

While Dillane has worked on a lot of projects, he says he was clueless about his time on Game of Thrones, and had to rely on co-star Liam Cunningham (Ser Davos), to help him out with the scenes :

“I’ve flicked it on [since leaving] to see if I could figure out what was going on, but I couldn’t. Liam Cunningham [who plays Davos Seaworth, Stannis’s erstwhile consigliere] is so passionate about the show. He invests in it in a way I think is quite moving, but it wasn’t my experience. I was entirely dependent on Liam to tell me what the scenes were about — I didn’t know what I was doing until we’d finished filming and it was too late. The damage had been done. I thought no one would believe in me and I was rather disheartened by the end. I felt I’d built the castle on non-existent foundations.”

He doesn’t hate his time on the show, he just wishes he knew what he was doing back then. he talked about how much the role did for his career :

“I can only work with what attracts me, and unfortunately that’s often not what attracts anybody else. Game of Thrones pays for all this looking around and waiting.”

Dillane now features in the British-French drama The Tunnel, alongside Clémence Poésy, famous for having played the role of Fleur Delacour in the Harry Potter franchise. Have you watched it? Tell us in the comments, down below!
