George R. R. Martin says Netflix's The Crown was the “safe choice” for Golden Globes
Game of Thrones had a good run with Season 6, garnering quite a few nominations for the show. With the awards season here, we will now be seeing what happens with the nominations. The 74th Golden Globe Awards ceremony was held recently, and Game of Thrones had a nomination for the Best Drama Series, and as it happened, it didn’t win. The show lost to Netflix’s newbie, The Crown, a period drama about the life of Queen Elizabeth II. George R. R. Martin, The author of A Song of Ice and Fire, the series of books upon which Game of Thrones is based, talked about this on his ‘Not a Blog‘.
George didn’t seem to be very happy with the results. He said :
“Lena Headey lost, and GAME OF THRONES lost, and WESTWORLD and its two amazing actresses lost as well. Pfui. That was disappointing, but not unexpected. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association surprised me this year by nominating three genre shows — GOT, WESTWORLD, and STRANGER THINGS — for Best Drama, but in the end they reverted to form and passed over all of them in favor of the safe choice, the ‘prestige’ historical drama THE CROWN. (Which I did enjoy, mind you, even though I went away thinking that while it may have been good to be the king in the Middle Ages, it really sucked to be the queen in the 1950s). So: no Globes for us.
The highlight of the Globes — and the day — was Meryl Streep’s speech.”
George R. R. Martin’s jab at the Hollywood Foreign Press isn’t unjustified. They have been known to swerve against genre shows, and as such, nobody should really be surprised that The Crown took home the prize. The Crown isn’t a bad show at all, it is actually a good one, but given the season that Game of Thrones had, and the debut that Westworld did, it seemed unfair that neither won.
Well, at least we have two more years! Considering how every season of Game of Thrones is better than the last one, I would say that there’s a good chance that it might win a Golden Globe before it rests in peace.
