Game of Thrones uses cheap IKEA rugs as capes for men of the Night’s Watch

Game of Thrones comes with a big budget consisting of $10 million per episode. Details matter more than anything on this epic fantasy show, especially on costumes. Nobody is a stranger to the fact that Game of Thrones has about a hundred people working on the costumes of characters alone.
Every single detail is closely looked at. It’s obviously important for the show to present some character traits and plot line changes just through costumes and tiny details. Wouldn’t you be surprised if we said that a show that spends countless amount of money on minute details used cheap IKEA rugs for the capes of the men of the Night’s Watch?
Yup, it’s true. Game of Thrones decided not to spend a lot on the fur that keeps the Night’s Watch safe from the piercing winter. Costume Designer Michele Clapton revealed this last year at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles: “These capes are actually IKEA rugs,” she said.
“The rugs were cut, shaved, dyed, and then subjected to the rigorous breakdown process that makes the costumes on Game of Thrones look as worn-in as real medieval clothes. I want the audience to almost smell the costumes. Here they were waxed and frosted so they belonged to the landscape.”
Apparently IKEA provides the winter guards for the sword in the darkness and the shield that guards the realms of men. You can hear it for yourself in the video below at the 27:35 minute mark.
