It is Christmas time for all the Game of Thrones fans across the globe as the seventh season of the show has begun. But, Santa is not done with his gifts; not yet. HBO’s programming president Casey Bloys has confirmed that the script for season 8 is complete and is ready to go. There were more cherries on the cake as well, as he went on to hint that, some of the episodes might have the runtime as long as 2 hours.  2 hours for a television show seems a lot, but for a show with such massive popularity as Game of Thrones, it will ensure that the fans stay happy, considering the number of episodes have been trimmed down.

“We haven’t had that discussion yet because I don’t know how long the episodes are going to be. Two hours per episode seems like it would be excessive, but it’s a great show, so who knows?” Casey says.

The number of episodes designated for this season (7) and the upcoming final season (6) are significantly less than what the viewers had in show’s previous six seasons (10 for each season). However, fans have reasons to be happy as the reduction in ‘number of episodes’ has been somewhat compensated by the increased runtime for the episodes. Dragonstone – the premiere episode this season was the 2nd longest premiere with a runtime of 59 minutes, which is just behind the 62 minutes long pilot episode of the show all the way back in 2011. Also, the final two episodes of this season will be 71 and 81 mins long, making them the longest episodes in the series till date.

Speaking of season 8, Bloys confirmed that the scripts have been completed and also made it quite clear that their current priority is the next season of the show and the viewers would not be seeing the Game of Thrones spin-off show at least for a year after the finale airs.
