Game of Thrones season 7 filming locations see a spike in tourist visits

Game of Thrones Season 7 showed us a lot of great locations like Casterly Rock, Highgarden, and more, but the focus was largely on Dragonstone. The location has been shown before, but not as well. Season 7 showed it being Daenerys Targaryen‘s home, which gave it unprecedented significance. Apparently the location is now getting a lot of tourist flow. In other news, Season 8 filming preparations seem to have begun. Read on!

First off, a report by El País, a Spanish paper, reports that the filming location for Dragonstone castle, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe in the Basque Country of Spain, has been getting a lot of visitor traffic. The number of visitors hit 75,000 this July, with the daily average of 2,419.

The traffic has increased so much that the authorities have begun thinking of ways to handle the traffic properly by restricting entry to a manageable size of audience, and improving infastructure to handle the influx. The Department of Environment for the Provincial Council of Bizkaia is also pushing to get the location pushed to be made a “protected biotope.”

Moving on, the preparations for Game of Thrones Season 8 seem to have started already. Irish Thrones, a Twitter account which updates fans on Game of Thrones developments from Northern Ireland, where a major part of the show is shot, tweeted that preparations have already begin at the sets at Corbet-Banbridge.

The area has the Linen Mills Studio, which has seen Game of Thrones filming previously, like the ‘Hold the Door’ scene, and some Winterfell footage from Season 7. It also has outdoor sets, like the Riverrun front, which was seen in Season 6. The front was ready for Season 7 coming, but never showed up in the episodes. Irish Thrones claims that both the sets are being prepped for Season 8. Read the tweets, below :
