Game of Thrones’ Gemma Whelan to play the lead role in 'The Tower'
Detective stories are one of the most popular genres of movies and literature that are full of thrill and suspense. The fun increases exponentially when the story is told by one of our favourite figures. Game of Thrones’ Gemma Whelan (Yara Greyjoy) will be playing the lead role in ITV’s ‘The Tower’ from ‘Homeland’ writer Patrick Harbinson. The three-part adaptation is based on Kate London’s Metropolitan Police novel Post Mortem.
Whelan will play Detective Sergeant Sarah Collins, who investigates after a veteran beat cop and teenage girl fall to their deaths from a tower block in southeast London. They leave a five-year-old boy and rookie police officer Lizzie Griffiths on the roof, only for them to go missing.
Collins works to find Lizzie before she comes to serious harm. But she also uncovers the truth behind the grisly tower block deaths. Collins and Griffiths later become the central characters in three books written by former Met officer London.
Filming of the series commences this month. The Tower is the product of Harbinson’s new production outfit Windhover Films and Mammoth Screen. The ITV Studios-owned producer was also behind the BBC/Netflix series The Serpent and Poldark. It is made in association with ITV Studios, which distributes internationally. ITV’s head of drama Polly Hill commissioned the series.
Gemma Whelan recently did a narrating of Sarah Pearse’s book The Sanatorium. Are you excited about the upcoming detective series? Talk to us in the comments below!
Game of Thrones ended nearly two years ago and fans miss the show dearly. Some of the actors of the show were so lovable among the general audience, they became a household name. However, we can always enjoy their amazing performances in their newer projects. Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen on the show, will be joining the ever-sprawling Marvel Cinematic Universe. Clarke is in final negotiations to join Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion.
Variety reported on 20th April, Tuesday, that Game of Thrones’ Khaleesi will make her debut in the MCU in the upcoming Disney Plus Title. She joins previously-reported cast Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Olivia Colman. Her role is currently under wraps. Marvel Studios declined to comment on the matter. Reps for Clarke did not immediately comment on the news.
Secret Invasion was announced as a development property last year, one of Marvel’s many planned titles for Disney Plus. Jackson is reprising his MCU role of Nick Fury, while Mendelsohn will play the Skrull Talos as he did in the film Captain Marvel.
The series is said to follow a group of shape-shifting aliens who have been infiltrating Earth for years. Ben-Adir has been set as the main villain. Kyle Bradstreet is attached to write and executive produce. Kevin Feige’s unit is producing the series for Disney Plus.
