Game of Thrones armorer Natalia Lee discusses working in a male dominated field

Game of Thrones is a show with a lot of violence, and that means it has a special focus on the weapons. The interesting thing to know is that quite like the show, which has a lot of female characters taking the lead, the armorer of the show is a woman as well! Natalia Lee, the armorer for Game of Thrones, recently spoke about being a strong force in a male dominated field. Read on!

Natalia Lee was recently interviewed by BBC, and she discussed Game of Thrones, and her profession. Speaking of working in a field dominated by men, she said:

“I’m constantly told, ‘Women don’t want to see that, women don’t want to do that.’ It’s so frustrating. We’re capable of handling weapons, I’ve proved I can carry all of them.My job’s a learned, technical skillset, so your gender has no bearing.”

Moving on, she spoke about how she sees herself as the ‘baby’ on Game of Thrones, working with men that are quite senior to her:

“The job can be hard. You’re going to be the only girl in the room, quite isolated. I’m used to men being rowdy, and getting them on your side pretty quickly. It can be intimidating for women to be outnumbered. But don’t be disheartened — most men want you to succeed and they’ve been my greatest allies.”

She said she also looks out for the young females on the set:

“If it’s a stand-in or stuntwoman, I’ll always reach out and talk to them, I know how it is. Some days I’m the only woman in a male environment of thousands of men. I know it can be uncomfortable.”

She then spoke about the actors. Starting off, was Kit Harington, who plays Jon Snow:

“I get all the younger girls and older ladies saying, ‘Kit Harington, he’s so beautiful’, but he’s a really lovely, polite young man.”

Recalling a filming run on a freezing glacier in Iceland, where she was well insulated while Kit had his hands and face exposed, she said:

“I was still freezing, and yet he said ‘Thank you’ every time I put on his sword or helped him with something. If it was me, I would probably have been screaming, going ‘Get that thing off!’”

She also revealed that her favourite actor is Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays Jaime Lannister, because he’s “very competitive, very sporty,” and can fight with one hand now. She also spoke of the actors’ dedication to their parts:

“They have such high standards, I’m surprised how hard they are on themselves on set. They’re on camera from morning ’til night, they have to ace every scene. For the youngsters, being kids growing up on a film set instils a hard work ethic.”

She also revealed that she likes Jerome Flynn (Bronn) because of his “wisecracking and also a great humanitarian in his own life”, calledMaisie Williams, (Arya Stark) “tremendously talented”, and Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth) a “very strong girl” who had to learn to lose her “feminine traits”.
