Actors from Game of Thrones are snagging some of the biggest roles in the entertainment industry right now. A lot of them have gone on to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The two franchises follow some really strict protocols. Emilia Clarke, who recently made a big switch from Game of Thrones to Marvel in the new series, Secret Invasion, recently talked about what the two companies have in similar.

How Game of Thrones copied Marvel’s tactics

Clarke revealed in a recent chat with EW, “When we were doing Game of Thrones, when it started to get to the later seasons, some massive security changes happened. I was chatting with [showrunners] David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] and they were like, ‘Marvel. We’re just learning from Marvel. Whatever Marvel’s doing, we just want to do that.’ So that became, you don’t print anything — and then there was like me and Peter Dinklage being like, ‘I need it on paper! I can’t learn my lines without it being on paper!’”

It’s easier to keep an MCU secret than Game of Thrones

Clarke compared the security between the two, “I was like, ‘I think a man’s going to come and kill me if I say anything,’” she recounts, adding that she was so concerned about being discovered that she even removed the SIM card from her phone for the first several days of recording. Given how painful it was when items from the Game of Thrones set leaked, she was determined not to be the cause of any leaks.

“I’ll tell you what, it’s so much easier now because whenever it comes up or people want to ask, you just get to be like, ‘Dude, Marvel. I can’t say anything,’” she said. “That’s just what I kept saying over and over again.”
