Bella Ramsey lands the lead role in period drama Monstrous Beauty
There have been several iconic characters in the history of television shows, but none have managed to steal the screen as swiftly and in a very short time as Game of Thrones’ Oberyn Martell and Lady Lyanna Mormont. The duo who played the roles, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, are now ruling television with their new show The Last of Us, where they play the leads, Joel and Ellie. Ramsey has just managed to grab another lead role in an upcoming film that will change your notions of beauty.
What is Monstrous Beauty about?
Written and directed by Romola Garai, Monstrous Beauty combines characters from real history with fiction. The full synopsis of the story reads:
“Fuelled by the desire to be defined for who she is rather than how she looks, Barbara aspires to become a playwright under the auspices of famous actress Nell Gwyn (Negga), powerful mistress to the King. Nell herself is intent on teaching Charles a public lesson on the true appreciation of women beyond their physical appearance. Barbara seeks the help of famous playwright of the day, Aphra Behn (Shaw), and casts beautiful actor Vale (the object of Barbara’s own desire) as the lead, despite his lack of talent. But will Barbara succeed in becoming a woman of independent means whilst challenging a highly patriarchal society, and become master of her own destiny?”
What role will Bella Ramsey play in Monstrous Beauty?
According to a report by Deadline, Ramsey will play the role of Barbara Field, a young woman born into poverty with a condition that covers her entire body with excessive hair. Being one of the very few women who is educated, she is offered the opportunity of a place in the luxurious court of King Charles II (West), as a “Natural Wonder” where people with extraordinary appearances are showcased for the aristocracy.
Who is in the cast of Monstrous Beauty?
Besides The Last of Us star Ramsey, Dominic West stars as King Charles II (The Crown), Ruth Negga (Passing) as his mistress Nell Gwyn, and Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve) as Aphra Ben, the first ever published female playwright in history.
When does Monstrous Beauty release?
Filming for Monstrous Beauty is due to begin in September, and it might take at least a year for the film to finally be here.
