Age of Darkness: A survival RTS game inspired by Game of Thrones’ The Long Night

Video games and TV shows/movies have often worked hand-in-hand to help promote each other. They also provide the ultimate user experience, where players can live through their favourite films or series. Game of Thrones’ The Long Night was one of the most horrific and stressful episodes of the series. One game developer PlaySide recently released Age of Darkness, a horror survival video game heavily inspired by the Game of Thrones episode.

“When starting development we were inspired by the Game of Thrones episode ‘The Long Night’,” explains James Berkelmans in an interview with PCGamesN, one of the game’s designers. “The whole idea being that when night came you had to hold your ground against a large horde of enemies, that’s where the idea of our death nights started.”

“We’ve created this system to give us the flexibility to create some amazing game moments,” says Mario Barone, another designer. “It goes without saying that the sheer amount of units our engine can allow is very impressive. Not only can we do this – but we can do so with many 3D effects and a highly detailed world.”

As the guardian of the last city, you go through an intense day/night cycle where you must balance building up your settlement and exploring the wilderness around you to hunt for valuable resources during the day. As night descends, there’s a brief window of time where enemies are tougher, but the rewards get better. When the ‘death night’ starts for real you’ll want to be behind your walls.

Game of Thrones wrapped up filming nearly two years ago, but it has been a decade since the most recent book in the series came out. Fans have been waiting for the next book Winds of Winter for forever now. George R. R. Martin keeps promising he is working on the novel, and this time he has promised he will complete it in early 2022. He said in an interview with WTTW recently that he thinks that his first priority, House of the Dragon, will “probably be on next spring” — and the next, long-awaited book in this series, The Winds of Winter.

The last book to be published in the Game of Thrones series was A Dance with Dragons on July 12, 2011, almost 10 years ago. It had a lot of shocking and exciting stories, such as Jon Snow beheading Janos Slynt in the courtyard at Castle Black, Daenerys Targaryen mounting Drogon for the first time in Daznak’s Pit. There’s Cersei Lannister’s harrowing walk of shame, and there’s the Night’s Watch rebelling against Jon Snow.

However, Martin’s inability to write at a faster speed has deeply frustrated the fans. His long list of admirers has mostly turned into critics, which also includes famous literary figures such as horror icon Stephen King. Whether Martin likes it or not, it has been a lot of time since he last wrote a Game of Thrones book.

Game of Thrones prequel House of The Dragon is fast on track for its release in 2022. The production hit a little snag recently after a positive COVID-19 case was detected, but since then it has been back to normal. Fans are highly excited about the upcoming series but they do have concerns if it will be as good as the original series, especially after the controversial final season.

Game of Laughs page on Facebook asked Game of Thrones fans via a post if the upcoming prequel will be better than the original series. The responses varied from great excitement to genuine concerns about the show’s success, and also some quips about HBO’s ability to make a great show. We selected a few of the comments from the post, to give you an idea of what the fan community thinks about the prequel series.

Enrique Vaca – “It will be great in terms of story depth and also of fights between dragons. I’m certainly optimistic that this show will be more loyal to the book. Also, I’m definitely hoping that Balerion the Black Dread has the most majestic scenes ever.”

Marques Johnson – “Currently reading the book Fire and Blood which this show is gonna be based on. So if it lives up to the book hype it’s gonna be a great show!”

Dianca Rock – “It depends on how much GRRM is involved. They better pay him his worth and keep him on as a screenplay writer. That’s all I have to say.”

Nick Quillen – “It’s hard to say GOT was amazing and GRRM has published a lot of Targaryen lore so I’m just excited to see what the new show brings.”

Bernd Ki – “Sure, because it’s already written to the end so they can’t make a horrible fantasy-diarrhea ending like S8!”

Gerardo Larenas Gyaldhart Larenahtz –“Considering the statements made by Olivia Cooke, where she says that this new show won’t depict “violence against women” (when violence against EVERYONE has always been part of this saga), they seem to be taking a PC route and it will hardly be on the same league as GoT.”

Hovo Asatryan –“It has the potential, but will people’s hearts accept and love it as they did with GoT….. GoT was a phenomenon and it is hard to repeat such success….”

Matei Bobes –“Probably since they aren’t restricted to follow the book’s storyline… I hope the new characters will be at least as good.”

Eileen Dailey Hicks on Wiki of Thrones Facebook page said –“Read the book 3 times. Very hard to comprehend. Have to use charts. The prequel will have LOTS of dragons like 10. There will be Targaryens flying into battle on their dragons battles where dragons battle each other. Not sure how HBO will handle all the incest as like 5 reigns have brother married to sister. Wondering how the average fan will handle the show without reading the book. HBO will have to simplify it. It’ll be great!”

The Iron Throne has become a pop culture icon and a symbol of power in the fictional world. It represents an absolute reign, that corrupted many who tried to claim it for themselves. However, there have been many depictions of the Iron Throne, as various artists imagine them in their own ways. Surprisingly, the Iron Throne we saw on HBO’s TV adaptation of Game of Thrones wasn’t George R. R. Martin’s favourite design. In fact, he sites Marc Simonetti’s illustration of the Iron Throne in The World of Ice and Fire as his favourite.

Martin brought this up way back in 2013 writing about the Iron Throne in the Live Journal. He does say the HBO Iron Throne is THE Iron Throne, and always will be. But he went on to talk about the most accurate depiction of the Iron Throne. He chose the Iron Throne as painted by the amazing Marc Simonetti for his 2013 Ice & Fire calendar. And we can see why he chose it.

“This Iron Throne is massive. Ugly. Assymetric,” Martin wrote. “It’s a throne made by blacksmiths hammering together half-melted, broken, twisted swords, wrenched from the hands of dead men or yielded up by defeated foes… a symbol of conquest… it has the steps I describe, and the height. From on top, the king dominates the throne room. And there are thousands of swords in it, not just a few.”
